How did the Japanese manage to inflict heavier casualties on the Americans in Iwo Gima?
Since Iwo Gima is famous for being the only DEFENSIVE battle in which the americans suffered heavier casualties than the Japanese(Americans suffered less dead but dead and disabled combined are 7000 more than Japanese casualties). With complete american control of the air and sea, overwhelming american numerical superiority, more advanced american weapons, suicidal Japanese banzai charges, and Japanese grenade suicides, how did the Japanese inflict such heavier losses on the Americans?
I have been lucky enough to visit Iwo Jima and by doing this you then understand why things went as they did.
The Japs were hiding in caves and deep into the mountain. No amount of Naval gun fire would ever kill them. All they did was sit there and wait.
Eventually you had to have the ground troops move in. When this happend you then had the Japs pop out and start to mow them down. The areas where the Marines and Sailors landed was flat open beach.
The Japs could not miss. As many Marines moved onshore at once, not all of them could be killed, so some made it to safety and then regrouped and went ahead and took care of business.

Do you think Japan could have won WWII if....?
They didn't use suicidal Technics, and used better tactics instead of waiting for the Americans to land on the Islands then kill as many as they could? I thought it was pretty foolish of them to lie and wait then just ambush the enemy. (Excluding Iwo Jima), the only offense they really used against the Americans were Banzai charges which 80% of the chance failed, and got more Japanese killed than U.S. Marines.

Not sure....ask the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The Germans killed 5 allies for every German that died....did no suicide attacks.... had better equipment and resources than Japan...... and they STILL lost
Russia was moving on Japan.....and all of Europe would also...... the Japanese had no nuclear program.... they lived in mostly wooden structure that were vulnerable to fire bombing ( more Japanese died in the fire bombing of Tokyo than both Nagasaki and Hiroshima.... most of their Navy was on the bottom of the sea...... they had no long range air force......
They had as much chance winning WW II as I have becoming Queen of England with out a sex change operation
