How to Get a Better Bass Drum Tone?
So I've got a bass drum (22" diameter) with reasonably decent heads on it, with a porthole cut in it. At the moment I've just got a dirty old pillow stuffed into it, which sounds ok, but it overmuffles it, and I'd really like to get a little more resonance and "thwack" out of it. Any suggestions?
If you want more of a "thwack" or more of a tight "punch" you would have to loosen the resonance side slightly and tighten the beater side slightly. Laying the pillow like an L against the inside of the beater side also gives it more punch and attack. Pillows to tend to make things a little muffled so perhaps instead you could try a felt pad where the beater will hit. This can increase boom in the overall drum sound. In typing this im finding that its harder explain drum tuning than to do it.
Good luck!

What is a good double bass drum set brand?
I am contemplating getting my boyfriend a double bass drum set for christmas and I'd like to start pricing. Are there any particular brands that are better than others?
well, you will be able to find a double bass set for almost any brand you want. all you do is buy an additional bass drum. true, some sets are sold with the 2 drums, but really most any brand you want will have the option to add a second bass. but, good brands include:
tama
pearl
yamaha
mapex
DW
gretsch
ludwig
those are all popular, well known, and quality brands. keep in mind some of these manufacturers also make a cheaper starter set under a different brand name. but its made by the same company. just something to look out for.

[..YouTube..] Something that does what the Aphex Aural Exciter can do would be an amazing feat. Basically it (if you dont already know) delays the bass frequncies to add more clarity/perceived loudness to the mix. It just makes it sound more awesome and everyone loves those things. Maybe if you make an effect competition I'll show you my attempt ahaha. Using it on the aux return oddly gives the my bass drum some annoying hiss. The aux return always gives me the most digital glitches. arg
