How the self releasing trout catfish bass bait hook works
whem is the best time to start fresh-water fishing in the boston-ma area? for anthin bass trout etc....?
i have several ponds and stuff in town but no bites yet and whats the best equipment for early season?
I'm in your area...right now is the time for big bass. Use about a 6 ft. medium action spinning set up with 10-12 lb test line (Stren is good). Throw a black plastic lizard. Tight Lines!

Florida??? I thought you lived in Minnesota – you mentioned the Mayo Clinic once and I just assumed… I live in the southern portion of the Pacific Northwest. Lots of rivers and lakes. We fish for bass and trout – salmon and steelhead in the rivers. We have a small cabin by a lake full of bass, and go there as often as we can. We've become friends with the people that live on the mountain and I love their lack of bullshit. They are concerned with the price of their cattle, or getting so much snow it caves in your barn. But they are smart and choose to be where they are.
Your life sounds good too. And grandkids, I have 2 actually with #3 on the way. I am about a year older than you and grew up on weed, chocolate mesculin, and Led Zeppelin. Yes, I know who you are XMan – I was there too.
And in 1973, I received a life saving blood transfusion. Ironic, isn't it?
Geo covered a lot of what your going to need, and I’ll throw in a couple of more ideas. Lake Gregory has Bluegills, Crappie, and Bass as well as Trout and Cats, and you might want to think about targeting the Bluegills and Crappie to start with. The only reason I say that is that a little success in the beginning will go a long way to making it an enjoyable hobby that you’ll want to pursue. For Gills and Crappie you would want a light action rod in the 5’6″ to 6′ range, one of the first 4 on page would be good, and a half way decent reel with at least 6 ball bearings that will hold ~120 yards of 6 lb. mono. Now some slip bobbers(easier to cast with) split shot weights, and hooks and your ready to go. There should be bait shops up there that will have what works on the lake, maybe red worms or grubs of some sort, and they might even point you to a decent spot to fish. The nice part of going out rigged like this is that you will probably catch some panfish, but you can also easily hook a bass, trout, or cat. Once you find a spot to start fishing, don’t get tied down to that piece of ground, after a while start walking down the shore, try new spots, keep moving to catch more fish. Just to make it fun you should get some smallish jointed floating Rapalas, after some bobber fishing tie one of those on and work the shore back the way you came. Cast it out, let it sit, twitch it a little, reel it in a bit then stop and twitch it some more. Even getting a small bass to come up and hit a top water bait can be a lot of fun. Last tip…enjoy just being outdoors and on the water!
