What is the garison head cover for the typical French soldier?
I saw two soldiers by the Eifel Tower and they were wearing Green Berets. I was under the impression that only the Foreign Legionnaires wore them. Does any one know any thing about French uniforms?
Green colored berets in the French military denote a commando-type force - usually the Foreign Legion and the crack Naval Commandos. They probably were Legionnaires, they do get a lot of celebrity-type attention.
There are numerous other examples of headgear in the French military and Gendarmerie - assorted berets depending on unit, garrison-type hats and the famous Kepis (for ceremonial or dress purposes).

Red Beret Soldiers of Singapore (1985 - 1987)
Is there some sort of prep course before the US Navy SEALs BUD/S training?
I am talking about something like the US Army's SOPC (Special Operations Prep Course). It preps people physically for the training required to be a US Army Special Forces Soldier (Green Beret). Does the Navy have anything like that to prep people physically for the rigors of BUD/S training?
If you're talking about something like a "summer camp" then, to my knowledge there isn't.
However, there are fitness programs floating around the Internet that are supposed to do you some good. I know a SEAL/SWCC recruiter who's training his kid for SEAL. One day when we were cranking out a couple K in the pool his son ran a 500, swam a 500, did 50 push-ups, 50 sit-ups and 20 pull-ups... and then did it again. Now we did the 2000 in about half an hour. The kid was about 12 at the time. I have no idea what his dad him doing to get into that kind of shape, but it's guys like that who are going to be your competition.
Here's the preparation of which I'm aware. If you get the SEAL Challenge written into your enlistment contract, you get a little more PT during Boot Camp. Then you get eight more weeks or preparation before you leave Great Lakes. If you're still able to walk, and still interested, you go to Coronado for five weeks of "Indoc." If you're still standing, and still motivated, the training starts. If you ever find yourself standing in formation on a beach in Coronado waiting for the fun and games to begin, look around you. See the guy immediately behind you, the one to your left, the one to your right, and the guy in front of you? The odds are that at least four of you won't be standing there at the end.
You might hook up with a SEAL Motivator. He'll be able to give you the latest requirements. How do you find one? Go to http://www.Navy.mil click on the information index link, click on S, scroll down to SEAL, and then hunt around that site. There should be a link to SEAL recruiters or motivators. You could go to a recruiter, but if you're not close to 17, they might not take you too seriously... but that's conjecture... I don't know... you might try that route and let me know how it works out.
But, in the "real world" I don't believe there's any organization that would accept the liability to take civilians and actually give them a realistic exposure to the first few weeks at BUD/S.
People who tell you stuff like "Hell Week's the worst time of your life," or that it's a mental thing, are only kind of right. While I suppose one can't help relate difficult experiences to that period of ones life, its purpose is to toughen you up for the hard stuff ahead. But I believe the hardest thing about that week isn't just that it's demanding, a lot of stuff you do as a SEAL operator will be demanding... sometimes more demanding with higher stakes, but Phase I is kind of a systemic shock. Once you find that you have what it takes to survive it, the next time you run into a rather tough assignment, your system kind of kicks in to auto pilot and you do what has to be done... I suppose that's what they might refer to as the mental thing... except unless they've been there, they really don't know. Afterward you'll say something like, "That was about as bad as [some evolution] during Hell Week."
I'm not sure if SEAL training "makes SEALs." I think it takes all the applicants who wannabe SEAL, weeds out those who only wannabe but really don't have what it takes, and then gives the rest (those who, deep down inside, somehow "have to be") the opportunity to find out if they only think they have what it takes, or if they really have it. From those it selects the new guys.
All I can tell you is that whatever requirements you find, whatever your mentor demands of you, do more... a lot more. If, for example, if they give you a rest period between sets, ignore it... do the sets without the break. I don't believe I ever heard of a mission that, once they arrived at the target, had rest breaks built into it. I believe you'll find that it's usually hit the water or ground, get in, get the job done, get out, get picked up... minimal muss and fuss (better none)... and nobody asks for a "time out" to rest.

Those French soldiers have got massive berets. Ridiculous. I thought they were supposed to be good at stuff like that.
