how can i adjust the brakes on a 5 ton cargo truck 6x6?
So someone in the battalion we relieved drove the 5 ton with the parking brake on for the whole day.Why doesn't it work? I was thinking i could do something with the slack adjusters because the brakes might be wore down but I can't see them anywhere. The brakes work it's just the parking brake that doesn't work. can you give me an idea where to start cause it's just me and one other mechanic in our shop and our battalion is deployed all over the world so we are kinda cut off from everyone else's knowledge....thank you

It doesn't work because the brake shoes have been worn and aren't gripping.
You can't find the slack adjusters because there aren't any exposed, it uses wedge style brake actuators. You are thinking of civilian trucks, are you a civilian mechanic?
On a 900 series 5 ton, the spring brakes are supposed to engage when the parking brake is applied. That means that the spring brake override was applied or the truck has a faulty spring brake valve.
So it sounds like the truck has a few problems.
To adjust the hand brake, try tightening the adjuster at the top of the brake handle. With the brake off, twist it like you're tightening a lid, clockwise looking at it from the top.
If that doesn't work, then the cable needs to be adjusted at the back of the transfer case under the truck. It attaches to the brake lever under the truck with a big nut and a jam nut. Tighten these to shorten the cable.
With the wheels chocked, and the system aired up, test the spring brake system.
1- make sure the spring brake override button on the instrument panel is pulled out.
2- with the parking brake lever down, lift up on the spring brake lever behind it. It's the small lever with a wheel on it that operates an air valve behind the hand lever. (use a flashlight)
3- when you lift up on that lever, you should hear the spring brakes apply,(you'll hear air release and a soft moan)
