Effect on Returning Soldiers
Hello I am 17 and am strongly considering joining the Active Army as either a cavalry scout or a light wheel vechicle mechanic. The only thing holding me back from signing up is the effects it can have on you mentally. I want to go oversees and am not afraid to die for the USA but I dont want to come back all messed up in the head. So for people who have been in the Army and gone over sees, has it had any major negative effects on you. Thanks for the help.
i served in iraq and other "places" i do have PTSD but it all depends on what you see , my PTSD is linked to watching a stryker full of my buddies get hit by a IED and watching them burn to death and not being able to help them at all , i was "humping" all over iraq . as compared to others that where fobbits and are "ok"

Streamlight Sidewinder from US Cavalry
How is the USA Military Organized and how are Company's, divisions, units, and forces numbered?
I always see on the news or in movies that the various forces of the military are organized into groups, squadrons or units and was wondering how they are numbered.
An example is in the TV show "Band of Brothers" they were E Company of 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, United States Army 101st Airborne Division. Was there 506 different regiments and over 100 airborne divisions?
Or in the news real life examples like:
'21st Fighter Squadron (21 FS) is part of the 56th Fighter Wing' Is there a 1st to 20th FS? and is there a 1st to 55th Fighter wing? whats higher then a fighter wing?
or in the Army the '3rd and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.' Where are the 4th, 5th... 10th, ect.
Are the missing numbers still there? Do they reactive them? How do they number future regiments?
Guess it's a loaded question but I don't understand how its organized.
Thank you
I understand the different levels in the organization, but what about the numbers?
During times of full deployment, such as during a world war, the numbers for units were often in unbroken sequence.
But then during peacetime when many military personnel left or were no longer needed, some units were disbanded or merged with other units. As a result, there were breaks in the numbering system. These breaks remained to prevent confusion with the existing units.
If another world war occurs, as more civilians joined or are drafted, the military would create new or reactivate old units and assign those numbers where the breaks in sequence occur.
In paragraph 2-3, d (2) of the source link I posted below, it states in part
"The Chief of Military History controls the issuing and deactivating of all numbers used in unit designations."
"Armies are numbered in series beginning with" First. "
Corps are numbered in series beginning with Roman numeral " I "."
"Divisions; brigades (except those organic to divisions); regiments; groups; battalions; squadrons; separate companies, troops, batteries, platoons, and detachments; and other separate units are numbered in series within a branch, beginning with " 1st." ."
"Brigades that are organic to divisions will normally be numbered in series within the division beginning with" 1st." ."
"Within battalions and squadrons the headquarters element will be designated headquarters company, detachment, battery, or troop, as appropriate. Other elements of the battalion or squadron will ordinarily be lettered alphabetically, beginning with " A." ."
