Deer Fox

Why does my dog like to roll in animal poo?
My dog has a habit now and again of deciding to roll on his back in animal poo - sheep, badger, deer or fox seem to be his favourites.
Makes him a bit smelly and no idea why he does it.
Any ideas?
This is not at all unusual behavior in a dog. Unfortunately , most dogs like the disgusting smell of other animals poo as well as rolling around in the carcasses of dead animals. I can not bear to imagine how badly these things must smell to them, as their sense of smell is so much greater than ours!! It is the strongest of the senses in the dog. Compared to a human's 5 million olfactory receptors, dogs have 220 million!
Yuck!! It must be unbelievably disgusting.
It seems to be mostly females that do this , although both males and females are known to. I know my female Lab/Shepherd mix was so delighted to roll in a dead turtle. That was about 8 years ago and I never forgot it. I cannot imagine dealing with something as disgusting on a fairly frequent basis ![]()
To the dog, the smell is so wonderful that he wants to wear it like it as a perfume or something special! They also are most likely trying to show us, and other dogs, how happy they are about what they found! We are supposed to be happy too! Kind of like a cat bringing dead animals to us to show their love!
They are also leaving their scent for the other animals.
Is there any way to keep him from these things? Are these animals all on your property, and he is free to run? In that case it is difficult. You either need to keep him on a leash or on a "come" command. When you see him getting ready to do this or in the process, I would try to squirt him with a water pistol or squirt bottle, preferably without him seeing you. This way he will associate doing this with a negative response and may stop. If your property is large and he is roaming, it will be a hard thing to prevent. You could fence off a smaller area where you could make sure it is "clean" for him. I guess it depends on how often it happens and whether you are willing to deal with the smell or not.
If he does this when you are walking with him and he is not on a leash, I would definitely keep him on one. I am presently using prong collars on my dogs to get them to walk properly in a heel position. It is working wonderfully. They do not stop to smell every disgusting odor and they walk like little angels(well, not little, but very well behaved!). It is amazing. We can pass dogs and people and they pay no attention. They always went nuts before, so I am totally baffled by their new behavior! They don't mind the collars, as they all come running when I start to get the collars and leashes ready, and they all wag their tails while we walk. Therefore I know the collars are not hurting them at all. I barely recognize them as my dogs!
I hope this was somewhat helpful! Good luck ![]()
