Elite Operations

What kind of operations/missions do U.S Army Rangers do?
I know their elite infantrymen and they get deployed on the frontlines but what kind of missions? Are they basically a marine/paratrooper/infantry/air assault infantry/mechanized infantry combined?
Rangers are the premiere elite infantry unit of the United States military. They are both airborne, and air assault qualified. They are required to be able to mobilize within 18 hours of being called on.
Rangers can perform a variety of functions, probably the most well known, is providing security for the smaller level Special Operations Units (1st-SFOD-D, and DEVGRU). What I mean by that is, for example (as seen in Mogadishu) a Delta Unit is given a specific target, while they go after that target the Rangers will set up a perimeter, and handle the large scale fighting that takes place, allowing the D-boys to go in and go after their ever so specific goal.
Providing said security force is not, however, the only role the Ranger Battalions are utilized for. They can perform as a regular (albeit better trained) infantry unit during conventional warfare. They are also used to recover people, or equipment that may be behind enemy lines, as well as airfield seizure.
They are NOT mechanized infantry, and take great pride in using as few vehicles as possible, only using HUMVEEs when necessary (which, much to my dismay, also means that the Regiment will not accept 19D Cavalry Scouts).
One final note, Rangers are NOT Marines, they are ARMY Rangers. They are Special Operations soldiers (special forces is a term exclusive to the Army's "Green Berets"
And just for the heck of interest, here is a neat story I found (thought it may or may not be true)

From the mine-protected vehicles used to counter the IED threat in Iraq, the use of Strykers as armored raiding platforms by the US Rangers, to the civilian vehicles adapted for military service by both Coalition troops and Private Military Contractors in the regions, this book uses rare in-theater photographs and color artwork to show the variety and inventiveness of the patrol vehicles being used in combat today. |

United States Special Operations?
I am a high school junior and I am looking into joining the military shortly after graduation. I want to join some type of specops so i was wondering the opinions of the yahoo community as to which branch has the best, most elite unit. I got a good grade on the ASVAB and am academically qualified, as far as i know, to join whichever branch and it's specops unit.
Ok, first to the person who said infantry Marines are equivalent to Rangers. Totally wrong. Infantry Marines are a generalized force, not a Special Force. Rangers are already Infantrymen (or Cavalry Scout, etc), and Ranger training goes even beyond that. Rangers = 1 Regiment. Marine infantry = what 10+ Regiments? Rangers are qualified in everything an infantry Marine is and then some (Airborne and Air Assault ops).
Now, to answer the question.
Special ops are not a direct fighting branch. They can be used as such, but that is not their purpose. Each Spec Ops job has its own role in the Spec Ops community. For example, Air Force PJ's and Navy SEALS, while both train equally as hard and both receive lots of combat training, have different roles. PJ's are trained to rescue downed pilots from behind enemy lines. SEALS are trained to conduct underwater demolitions and such.
What you gotta tell us is what you want to do in the Special Ops community. Like I said, PJ's are the best medical specialists in the Spec Ops community. AF Combat Controllers are the best at calling in Air strikes. SEALS are the best at water infiltration.

I'm an American whose grandfather and great-grandfather both served in the 42nd Royal Highlanders from 1914-1918. Both were ferocious fighters who said the battlefield was far easier than the training. My great-grandfather was wounded three times in battle and was furious he wasn't allowed to return to the fighting after the final injury.
