WW2 WWI IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM London UK - Superb Collection
what was life like for the kids in England during WWII?
can anyone please provide me with a good source?
I'm writing a paper on 'Hope and Glory' and I need two outside sources on the way children were affected or how they coped with the war...thank you!
My father was initially evacuated to a village near Bristol, but soon came back home. He lived near the river Roding in Essex - one of the main routes the planes took to get into London docklands and he and his older brother used to go to the fields overlooking the river valley and watch the dogfights taking place. Then, when the planes had gone and it was safe they'd go and collect anything they could find, shrapnel, bullet casings parts of aeroplanes. He seemed to have had an exciting war, not too frightening, although my grandfather had a factory in the east end of London, do I'm sure that all the family were concerned about it being attacked when he was at work, especially as it was near the railway lines - so could easily have been targeted.
My mother spent her early years in Keswick in Westmorlandshire (now part of Cumbria) where my grandmother was evacuated to, her war was very different, she has no recollection of the war at all, bar hearing some planes on occasion. She remembers a lot of soldiers and airmen and the privations - the Anderson shelter she said was a horrid, wet, spider filled place that they, thankfully never had to use.
