How Do I Make A Tone On A Fife (Or Other Flute-Like Instrument)?
It's the first thing I need to learn, and yet it's the hardest thing for me to learn! I got a fife the other day to learn at home as a hobby, but I just can't figure out how to strike a note!
So please help! The internet in general hasn't given me any good leads (stupid engine overloads...), so can you guys? Would be nice on top if maybe you could provide a site with pictures so I could better understand what I'm supposed to do.
well, a fife is a smaller scale of what a flute is (as in transverse western flute). what you need to do is first form a mouth shape to play the fife, know as the embouchure. to do this, the simplest way to teach would be to close your top and bottom lips tightly and open a very small hole in the middle of your louth and let out a small stream of air. gradually increase this hole while making sure the rest of your mouth remains tight. increase your airspeed to make a sound on the fife. also, you can try adjusting the position of the fife on the mouth, i think it affects a great deal. lastly, a basic exercise prior to playing the fife can perhaps be blowing across the neck of an empty bottle and maiking a sound. it's the baisc principle behind how flutes/fifes work.

How much does a good fife cost? How hard is it to play? If I've played the standard flute for 9 years will the?
fife by relatively easy? Is the fingering the same or slightly different and is the fife read in the same clef (treble clef) as the flute is? What about fingering?
The fife has got a similar embouchure to the standard flute, though obviously its tonal range is much more limited and therefore the fingering is a bit different. As the sound of the fife is considerably higher than what the flute has, the sound may not be as pleasant as the flute sound. But, they are in the same clef anyway.
