How come no one is talking about the other oil rig that overturned the other day in Louisiana?
Anyone else think it might be teabagger anti-envormental terroists behind both rigs?
Second Oil Rig Overturns in Louisiana
Not again: Reuters is reporting that a second oil rig has capsized on the Gulf Coast in inland waters near Morgan City, Louisiana. The Coast Guard has dispatched a team to the site of the accident at a “mobile inland drilling unit,” which is a rig used to drill exploration and development wells. The Coast Guard says the rig is not leaking at this time, but as a precaution it has deployed 500 feet of containment boom around it.

Because it was on it's way to be cut into scrap metal. It wasn't drilling anything.

How do I go about calculating the overturning moment?
I am mounting a 15m telescope mast with 4" radius pole to a trailer with dimension 8 foot by 4 foot. The mast will have a payload located at its top of aprox 70kg. The entire weight of the trailer included mounted mast and payload will be approx 500kg. How do I calculate the wind force that will tip the trailer over? Also how are the calculations effected by the installation of outriggers.
You would have to calculate the bending moments from all the attachments etc. That would require a calculation of the drag coefficient of these objects and their individual moments. You sum the moments of all the above. Outriggers will provide a higher resistant moment to the overturning moment. That is what they are for. The weight of the object will provide a resisting force which the overturning force will have to be larger than in order to turn the unit over. Obviously the trailer orientation will matter in how much force is required. So the moment of inertia of the trailer will be different in different orientations.
