Ideas for a Sergeant in the 7 Armoured Division of the British Army during World War Two?
Well, It may seem like I'm asking Yahoo Answers to write my book for me, but I just really want to mold my main character. What personallity would you, as a reader, find interesting for a WWII British Sergeant? Would you like him battle-hardened and grizzled, with no remorse for his killing? Or would you like him a reluctant young man, fearful of combat and the strange African landscape? Feedback please. Thanks!
Both of these will be stereotypes.
Many young men who fought in the very early part of WW2 were promoted to Sergeant and fought later on. Unlike their predecessors they were not professional soldiers but civilians who either volunteered or were called up to do the job.
The over riding feeling of many of these young men was to get the job done with minimum casualties on their own side and go home.
Having had the pleasure of many hours conversation with such men it i actually strange how many of them felt a kinship with the guys on the other side. Also civilians just doing what they were told. It didn`t stop them shooting and killing them but did instil in many of them a feeling that war was, ultimately, pretty bloody pointless.
Write yourself a young man, burdened with the worry of keeping his boys alive, fearful of fouling up and killing comrades and looking with wonder on Africa because it is so different from England.
Any man not fearful of combat is a bloody idiot. The grizzled sergeant who treats his men with disdain is a product of Motion Pictures and training routines. In training you can do that, in fact it is sometimes necessary to break down individuals and weld a team.
Any sergeant (or officer for that matter) that went into combat with that attitude toward his men would be as likely to be shot from behind as from in front.
Make your man truthful and he will be a good read.

Do brits think they have the best army ("man for man" as they like to say...) in the world?
seriously, the british army in no way compares to the US army. The british SAS were arguably the most elite in like WWII (more than 60 yrs ago btw) but not today. The SBS is also sub-par compared with the American Navy Seals. Look, I am not saying the british arent tough. All I am saying is that compared to the US (the worlds only superpower), we have the better special forces. It angers me when british people cite all of these "europeans" who think they have the better troops. Please. those are the same "europeans" that constantly complain about the epicness of the US.
PS- if we didnt have the best army, why are we the only country that can stand up to Russia when they were bullying georgia
Sorry to break it to you, but your talk about the SBS being sub-par to the navy seals is the biggest load of crap I've heard for a while. The Navy Seals had a saying when they were BEING TRAINED BY THE SBS. "There's 2 ways, the easy way or the British way!". You talk like the British Special forces haven't done anything since WW2, but in reality, they have been involved in many conflicts such as:
Both gulf wars
Afghanistan
Oman twice 1958-59 1970-76
Falklands 1982
Ireland 1969-92
Gibraltar 1987-88
Malaya 1950-59
Borneo 1962-66
South Arabia 1964-67
Liberia 1990
Ethiopia 1991
Vietnam (Australian SAS)
There are more than that, but hopefully you get my point that they have a lot of experience, more so than the US.
Personally, if I had the choice of Delta force or the SAS coming after me, I wouldn't like my choices, but I'd choose Delta force (or SEALS).
