DRIP FROM HOT WATER PIPE OUTSIDE /BUNGALOW. JUST HAD TWO NEW RADIATORS INSTALLED TWO DAYS AGO. ALL SEEMS OK I?
hi, small drip from pipe below roof outside, all is working inside bungalow/no upstairs in premises, has the plumber forgot to do something re this job?

Ok first of all this is very common. You have 2 tanks in your loft. A big one and a little one.
The big one does your hot water cylinder (in your airing cupboard), thats the stuff you get a bath in. All day long every time you run the hot tap the ball valve in that tank tops it up. Up and down it goes and it will be absolutely fine for many years because its moving.
The little one is the heating tank. This also has a ball valve in it but that ball valve probably hasnt moved in...how many years have you lived there?! What happens is the washer gets brittle and de-natures inside the valve. The other possibility is that the ball valve arm is stuck/partially stuck. They dont always have proper tank jackets and lids (called a bylaw30 kit) they get covered in crap/debris like fibre glass, mortar, lime, and just general dusty rubbish you get in lofts.
You may be able to sort it by giving it a little wiggle and a push up and down but be gentle - if its on an old glavanised metal tank it could tear off! If you have galvanised tanks i would suggest getting them changed as its usually the rust holding them together and pure faith!
Ok now the drip will probably increase at night time (the worst time!) as water pressure goes up as not as many people are using water at night.
Best practice is if its a plastic tank is just replace the ball valve. Turn your water off, open a cold tap and leave it open, go in your loft with 2 pairs of grips/pump pliars and change the body over. This can be done in 10 minuits to be honest.
Ladel the excess water out or submerge something to make the excess go out the overflow.
You want to be changing it with a Part 2 BRASS ball valve and float. Dont re-use the old one for the sake of 70p! This piece of kit can be bought from all plumbing merchants (PLUMBASE, WATERMARK, PLUMBCENTER etc...) and even crappy B&Q but avoid that place like the plague as the overcharg and their products are usually shoddy from the cheapest manufacturer.
It will cost under £10 so no ball breaker!
Including parts and labour a plumber will probably charge about £45 to £55. Plus VAT if he is VAT registered. Offer to pay him cash for cheaper and he will prob do the whole thing for under £30. These are good prices and to be snapped up. Ask how much he reckons it will be if its a straight foreward job and you pay him on the day cash if looking for someone new.
This is a common occurance and is not always possible to spot until a day or two (or even a couple of weeks) down the line so dont be mad at your plumber!

How can I measure the discharge pressure from a pipe from a reservoir with a given head?
If a water tower is 30 feet high and the water inside it is 8 feet from the bottom of the tank to the top. With a 2 inch pipe connected to the bottom of the tank, what is the pressure at ground level? If the 2 inch pipe is reduced to 1 inch, would the pressure from the ground level be different? How is that calculated?
Gauge Pressure = Density X g X h
= 1000 X 9.8 X 8= 78400 Pascal = 0.784 bar(g)
The absolute pressure will be 1+ 0.784= 1.784 bar (a) if the tank is open to atmosphere from the top !
if the pipe size is changed the pressure will not vary, unless you take a measurement in the pipe tap off far away from the tank which will cause a frictional drop across pipe. At the bottom of tank , the measurement remains same !

BP will soon inject drilling mud and concrete into the broken pipeline at a pressure of 50 barrels per minute in an effort to stop the flow of oil into the Gulf. Unless they know the accurate volume of oil, along with the pressure at which it is escaping, there will be little chance of success.
Scientists claim that approximately 50,000 to 100,000+ barrels of oil a day are leaking into our coastal waters. Knowing those approximations, we can roughly calculate how many barrels of oil are escaping from the pipe every minute and how much pressure will be needed to cap the well:
•50,000 barrels a day / 24 hours a day / 60 minutes = 34.72 barrels per minute
•100,000 barrels a day / 24 hours a day / 60 minutes = 69.44 barrels per minute
In order for the “Top Kill” plan to work, the drilling mud and concrete must be forced into the pipe at a rate exceeding the pressure at which the oil is escaping. As you can see (above), BP might have a slim chance of success if the pressure from the pipe is below 50 barrels per minute. However, if the oil pressure is above that number (72,000 barrels a day or more), their attempt to seal the well will be ineffective.
