General Officer
after you join the military, how long can you become the general, or commanding officer?
ok so today i thought, hey maybe ill join the military. i always wanted to be important, but i would really like to be something cool like an officer or the general. so how long before i can do that? a year or so? i have good credentials, one time i volunteered at a military camp. i really would like to wear a cool uniform and sit in a cozy layer in one of those black chairs with the high backs.
"An officer" is one thing. All you gotta do is get your bachelor's degree and get through Officer Candidate School, or be part of ROTC in college. It'll take about 4-5 years to go from high school grad to military officer.
"The general" is a whole other can of worms. Keep in mind that less than 1% of officers commissioned in the military even get to O-7 (that's a 1-star general). You will have to prove yourself against some of the toughest "job competition" in the world. Most generals are graduates of West Point military academy loads of distinguished service medals including those from other countries.

Which future Army General was forgiven by his commanding officer when he lost his personal weapon in Vietnam?
I asked this question a few days back and received two conflicting responses. I personally remember it to be Colin Powell, but one of the members seemed pretty convinced that it was Stormin Norman. I did a websearch on both of these individuals along with Shinseki and Franks, but couldn't find any valid articles containing the event. Anyone know where I can find some articles containing this story, or is this an erroneous rumor of a general? An urban "Cherry Tree" if you will.
It was Colin Powell. He was stationed in Germany at the time. You can find this story in his book, "My American Journey."
