As general of the Continental army, he led the fight that achieved the country's independence. As chair of the Constitutional Convention, he helped give that country its government. And as that government's first president, he not only guided the nation safely through its most vulnerable years, but established the precedents that still shape the presidency today. He was an international celebrity and a national hero, even in his own day.

Should George Washington be considered our national hero?
Every country I have ever visited seems to have a national hero. Especially the founder of the country. Shouldn't George Washington get more recognition then he does?
Yes; he went to great lengths to warn us about things that could cause the destruction of our country, and for 200 years we have been doing everything he warned us against, with the results that he predicted.

Your dad had that one summed up really well. What a great project and experience for the kids.
As an aside… On a show on the history channel they were featuring George Washington Carver…. and the one thing that struck me as him being a truly great man was that he taught every single one of his classes how to plant sweet potatoes and his reason was that he wanted to make sure none of his people ever went hungry. Of all the other contributions to modern science, the sweet potato planting was something he felt was one of his most beneficial.
