why do people think forcing criminals to fight in wars is a good thing?
i know a lot of issues need to be thought about deeply and for a long time, but isn't the answer to whether or not criminals make good soldiers an obvious one?
for the convenience of this argument we can divide criminals into two groups: those who have committed petty crimes and most likely are not bad people and hardened criminals, who are bad people (of course this is an argument in itself, i realize). why would criminals who have done petty crimes deserve to die? as for hardened criminals, they've proven themselves to be the antithesis of soldiers. they have violated our rights; why one earth would they ever defend them? we don't have the luxury of waiting for these people to "change." also, they will probably torture and kill others and/or disappear. this is my opinion. what's yours?
bill, this question is old, but this is proof.

Who the heck thinks that?
Well, you are obviously right. It's a terrible idea.

What is it REALLY like to be a female police officer?
I'm only 22 years old, and I have a toddler at home. My husband (who is a war-hardened soldier), seems to think the job would be too dangerous. I'm more worried about the disrespect/insubordination I suspect I'll get from the general public as a young, female officer.
The thought never even crossed my mind that I would have to deal with sexist crap from co-workers. I may be a naturally "bubbly" and smiling kind of person, but I have NEVER let anyone tell me I'm not good enough. I tend to be "one of the guys" when it comes to social groups, so I guess I thought I might be okay in that aspect.
thanks jtw - that last comment about being able to self-affirm brought on a whole new thought process..... Is that ability really that necessary? I mean, I'm not expecting everyone to literally applaud - but I don't know if my already fragile ego could handle constant criticism for an extended period of time.
You wont have to put up with sexists crap from co-workers. Sexual harassment isn't tolerated at police departments. You will get respected from your fellow officers by doing your job & being depenable to back others up. As far as the disrespect from the general public you'll get the same from the same type of morons that ask and answer questions here in biased manners. A police officer has to develop tefflon skin, we do take a lot of crap from a small portion of the general public but that goes along with the job. You just have to learn not to take it personally. If you would enjoy a job that is challenging and rewarding it is a good career. If you're the type of person that needs others to affirm to you that you are doing a good job, then law enforcement is not a good fit for you- you have to be self-satisfied to survive in this field.
I would say go for it!
