I need ideas for my research paper on middle age weapons in europe?
I'm in high school and I'm writing a college research paper on weapons of the middle ages of Europe, I need some help on writing it, because I don't really know what to write. It needs to be 5-7 pages long, so I'll need a few topics.
So far, I can only think of writing on how they affected wars, and what type of weapons were used for foot soldiers and knights. Help?
Those are a lot of great ideas above, but I would also mention the way that new weapons changed battle tactics.
As weaponry changed in the middle ages, the entire face of warfare changed. While the English longbowmen were extremely effective, a crossbow bolt had more force behind it and could pierce the thickest of armour. It is believed that in 1189 Pope Innocent II may have banned (or at least condemned) the use of crossbows because they were too effective. It was quick and easy to train *anyone* to use a crossbow. It was one of the first "point and click" technologies! A peasant who'd been trained for a week could take down a knight who'd trained for years. That was a slap in the face to chivalry itself, reducing battles to mere questions of life and death rather than honour and heroism. It also meant that a commander could dramatically increase the number of soldiers he could put in the field because they could be hired and trained much more cheaply than a knight in full armour. Battles grew in size, which also changed the tactics needed to win them.
Not long after this, you have gunpowder appearing in combat, first with cannon, then with very primitive guns (yes, I'm still talking about the Middle Ages, not the Renaissance). It was rare, but it did happen. They were as likely to blow up in the face of the user as to damage the enemy, and there was almost no control (they didn't have rifled barrels yet), but they were there, and it doesn't take fantastic aim to hit a city wall.

Keep in mind that the age of chivalry for knights in the middle ages did not occur immediately. There were many stages of knights going from a gang of greedy untrained thugs to a respectable chivalrous professional military.
The standards for a U.S. soldier have always been high maintaining that level of chivalry and professionalism (thus the phrase, an officer and a gentleman). The core values of branches vary, the Army is "Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage" Navy is "Honor, Courage, Commitment" and Air Force is "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence In All We Do"
The military is also closely controlled with LOAC (Law of Armed Conflict) and varying ROEs (Rules of Engagement) depending on the situation.
They are highly trained individuals with specialized jobs. Some military personnel do not fight and are there as a supporting role to assist those who do.
