Knights Merlin
Knights Merlin

Do You Believe That King Arthur Existed?
I've heard hundreds of stories where they could prove he existed, and hundreds to prove he didn't.
I've visited the site of his castle in England as a child, but over the hundreds of years the sea has eroded practically everything.
I'm not too fond of the whole Merlin, sword in a rock and those stories, but the tales of The Knights Of The Round Table, Lancelot, Vanor and Honor and all that interests me.
How many of you believe he existed?
I for one still need to decide, but thankfully that's where you guys come in!
Thanks
Perhaps Arthur existed, although he is probably based on a composite of Romano-British leaders who fought against Anglo Saxons invaders in the late fifth- or early sixth-century, embroidered and enlarged upon by Geoffrey of Monmouth's pseudo-historical Historia Regnum Britannae, which dates from about 1130. Some scholars even theorize that Arthur was a Celtic deity that Christian missionaries endowed with appropriately sanctioned attributes. The courtly love tradition, of course, has given its own values to Arthur's court, most notably in the telling the story of Lancelot and Guinevere.
Pros:
---Historia Britonum, a ninth-century manuscript attributed to a Welsh cleric by the name of Nennius, lists 12 battles Arthur fought, climaxing in the Battle of Mount Badon; recent studies, however, question the Historia Britonum's authenticity.
---The tenth-century Annales Cambrie (or Welsh Annals) records that Arthur was mortally wounded at the Battle of Mount Badon. Admittedly, the Annales Cambrie is based on an earlier now lost Welsh chronicle.
---The sixth-century poet Aneirin in the Y Gododdin manuscript makes a casual reference to Arthur. Similarly, sixth-century poems attributed to Taliesin refer to Arthur.
Cons:
---Arthur is not mentioned in the venerable Bede's 8th century Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Then again, the winners of any conflict write--or choose not to write--the history of the people they conquer. Similarly, the Egyptians didn't write about Israel's King David.
---No archealogical evidence verifies Arthur's existance:
1) Carbon dating has established that the Glastonbury Cross naming King Arthur as an occupant of a grave supposedly found by monks at Glastonbury in 1191 is a late 12th-century fraud.
2) Inscriptions at Tintagel, a possible site of Arthur's Camelot, don't refer to Arthur.
Bottom Line: The jury is still out on Arthur's existance, but most likely early Welsh oral history memorializes a 6th-century military leader who fought against the Anglo Saxons.
