Lifeguard Standard

any lifeguards/good swimmers know about the egg beater kick?
im a national lifeguard, but i havent applied for a job yet because some of my skills need some work (i passed my lifeguard examination alright, but for the sake of safety it needs to get better in the actual job).
the one kick ive had trouble with is egg beater which is the standard kick lifeguards should use. as far as all the other lifeguards see when i showed them I have the technique down right, but it doesnt seem powerful to me and i still prefer the scissor kick or even the submerged flutter kick.
so is it just the strength of my legs? im in no way weak im 5'10 and 170 pounds, and female lifeguards who are smaller than me have no problem. i am told it takes some getting used to though, but i dunno i still am not comfortable with it.
basically my other question ties into this, does anybody have any good leg exercises to increase their strength?
thanks swammi but you're talking about whip kick, im talking about the egg beater kick.
I generally think of it as the whip kick for breaststroke. As for making it stronger, just whip your feet around and bring them all the way around and together. I don't know of any specific exercises, just practice breaststroke frequently.

| | Mens Lifeguard Costume - Off Duty $44.95 I would hope this Off Duty Lifeguard is what he claims to be, because he looks like he?s having way too much fun to still be able to save lives. Though he does look like in his non-partying moments that he would have no problem dragging anything short of a great white out of the sea. Just look at those guns. The Off Duty Lifeguard costume comes with a muscle shirt (with attached tank top), shorts, a ball cap, and, just what every party goer-needs, a float beverage dispenser. After a hard day of saving lives and watching over people, why shouldn?t a lifeguard be able to have his very own drink dispenser? Gender: Male Theme: Humorous Size: Standard One-Size Color: None |

Lifeguard requirements?
What are the requirements (in Utah) to become a lifeguard? What are the requirements for the pre-screen and then for the actual test after passing the pre-screen? My local pool goes by the American Red Cross Lifeguarding standards if that helps any. Thanks
You must pass a swim test (500 meter swim, retrieve an object from 10 ft of water or greater and swim with object) and you must pass a first aid test. All the information you need to pass will be taught to you in the course so as long as you pay attention you shouldn't have a problem.
As a little help though, you may want to start reviewing first aid procedures for things like seizures, bleeding, choking, CPR, ans so on so that you won't get flooded with all these new things at the course if you happen to be un-familiar with them.
You can also go to www.redcross.org for more info

What type of lifeguard certification are you going for? If it is through the Red Cross, you don't have to swim with a ten lb weight…at least I never had to when I took my course. As far as a lap, it depends the person that told you, if they aren't a swimmer then a lap probably means from one end of the pool to the other, if they are a swimmer they probably mean down and back.
I'm still stuck on this ten lb weight in a 50 m pool. I might suggest looking into your local YMCA/YWCA, local American Red Cross office, or your local community education office for a different lifeguard certification class.
