Why is the Land Rover Defender, the British Army's Light Armoured Vehicle?
The soldiers are complaining about how bad they are and that they are not Armoured enough. Why don't they have an Armoured Range Rover of Discovery instead of an old Defender?
The US has a Humvee as their equivalent.
Britain has the 3rd largest defense budget so they could easily to have a Range Rover or Discovery instead for the defender/wolf.
a range rover is the up market land rover (with air con, sat nav etc.), the car and chassis are the same. they use the defender (the armoured version is known as the 'Snatch') because it is much better off road and far more reliable. in the gulf, some were reported to have been overturned and still worked when they were turned back over. the US humvee suffers the same problem as the Snatch. both are designed to defend troops from small arms fire and cant protect against IEDs and multiple RPG hits. the army is replacing the Snatches with better armoured vehicles but in regards to our defense budget. we are currently building aircraft carriers similar in size to the US Nimitz class and have ordered a load of F35s and Typhoons. this is more important than replacing land rovers that are extremely reliable and good at what they were designed for. the role they are given in iraq and afghanistan is not what they were designed for, a range rover would not help.

What is the best light weight body armour?
Hi. I want to know what the best light weight body armour is, for stopping long range and light rounds combined. Im guessing its kelvar, but want a suggestion as to the type and model.

Two North Carolina-based Marines died last week during combat in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, the Department of Defense said Tuesday. The Marines were identified Tuesday as Lance Cpl. Pedro A. Barbozaflores, 27, of Glendale, Calif., and Master Sgt. Jerome D. Hatfield, 36, of Axton, Va. The Marines died Saturday. They were assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune. Hatfield was the company operations chief for the battalion’s Delta Company. He joined the Marines in June 1991 and was promoted to the rank of master sergeant in Sept. 2007. Previous deployments for Hatfield included tours in Iraq in 2006 and 2008 and operations in the Adriatic Sea in 1992 and 2000. Hatfield was a former drill instructor and is survived by a wife and three children, ages 4 to 19, the Marine Corps said. Barbozaflores was a crew member of a light armored vehicle crewman.
