Macedonian Cavalry

Macedonian war tactics?
Can someone explain to me what worked about the Macedonian Crescent formation for their infantry? Like, what is good about it? Doesn't it spread your infantry too thin and a cavalry charge can punch through the line and flank? I know this isn't modern, but ancient tactics still have modern application if you just reshape a few quirks.
This sounds like the Roman tactic used at the battle of Cannae (I think!)... a formation wrapped around a larger force, which restricted it's movement, undermining the effect of larger numbers, allowing it to be defeated.

Rome Total War: Experiment #1 (Militia Hoplites vs Macedonian Cavalry)
What is your list of the greatest armies in history?
I only have 5,
Mongols (Genghis Khan)
Imperial Chinese (Qin and Han)
Macedonian (Alexander The Great)
Romans (Any great Roman general)
American (Technology)
Mongols had extremely sharp swords, great cavalry and armour (they used silk)
Chinese had a huge number of soldiers, Great technology and strategy
Alexander's army had the Royal tSpear Units and great tatics
Romans had the GREATEST infantry of all time
Americans are now the super power, Their technology is great, soldiers are well trained and they also have 4 star generals. and few 5 stars b4
how bout u?
The army of Alexander the Great. Overran Egypt, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Persia and got as far as India.
Roman armies of Scipio, Caesar and Trajan. The latter took Dacia against strong opposition and later reached the head of the Persian Gulf.
The army of Belisarius 6th century. Finally demolished the Vandals and recaptured much of the West for Constantinople.
The army of the eastern Han--finally ejected the "proto-Huns" which the Late Romans couldn't do.
The Turkish army of the Janissaries--very effective.
Napoleon's Grand army.
The German army in WWI and even more so, in WWII--extraordinarily effective tactically, even late in the war. The main German advantage btw was not discipline--even arab armies had that--but tactical skill.
The US Army. Had the most effective artillery force and best logistical system and close air support. In 1991 it destroyed about 4,000 Iraqi tanks while losing one.
The Israeli army. Again tactical proficiency--commanders with initiative and skill, and well trained troops--was the key to great success.
