Is it possible for a 300 pound man to run a sub-5 minute mile?
My friend is an idiot and thinks it is possible. I am trying to prove him wrong. Someone give me a good answer
Take it from me, a guy who has done sprints and distance. That is not possible. There is not a 300 lb guy in the world who can do that. There is not a 300 lb guy in the world who can do half that distance-an 800m-at the same pace (slightly under 2:30).
It would be tough, if not impossible to find 300 pounders who could run 400m at the same pace (75 seconds). If there are, it has to be 10 or less. Big guys are not built for endurance.
Even normal weight short sprint specialists (100m and 200m) would have trouble running a sub 5 mile. It doesn't matter if these 300 lb guys are very muscular. They are so big that they will fatigue very quickly compared to other runners when the distance is over 100m.
I have distance runner friends in their 20s who can run 16 minute 5ks and they can barely break 5 minutes (but it's easier when you're a teenager). I would bet money on my answer being correct.
