| | Ancient and Medieval Siege Weapons (Paperback) $29.46 In this richly illustrated guide, author Konstantin Nossov masterfully analyzes and recreates the weaponry, tactics, and stratagems of Ancient Egypt, Assyria, Judea, Persia, Greece, Rome, as well as those of the Gauls and Teutons, the Byzantine Empire, the Muslim world, and Medieval Europe. Discover how battering rams, bores, scaling ladders, siege towers, throwing machines, and other weapons developed over time. Numerous charts, illustrations, photographs, and tables will help you understand how these weapons were constructed, used, and adjusted to serve the needs of the warriors who wielded them. Based on an in-depth analysis of the work of ancient authors, including Apollodorus, Athenaeus, Heron, Vitruvius, and others, ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL SIEGE WEAPONS not only shows you how to recreate the siege weapons themselves, but it will give you a deeper, better understanding of the history of war. |
| | The Medieval Siege by Bradbury, Jim [Paperback] $55.84 The chapter on weaponry is descriptive and there are excellent drawings as well as contemporary illustrations. Equally, the final chapter on the conduct of sieges is admirably forthright... the index is particularly good. TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT In medieval warfare, the siege predominated: for every battle, there were hundreds of sieges. Yet the rich and vivid history of siege warfare has been consistently neglected. Jim Bradburys panoramic survey takes the history of siege warfare in Europe from the late Roman Empire to the 16th century, and includes sieges in Byzantium, Eastern Europe and the areas affected by the Crusades. Within this broad sweep of time and place, he finds, not that enormous changes occurred, but that the rules and methods of siege warfare remained remarkably constant. Included are detailed studies of some of the major sieges including Constantinople and ChateauGaillard. Throughout, Bradbury supports his narrative with chronicles and letters. irsthand accounts of danger, famine and endurance bring the acute reality of siege warfare clearly before the reader. JIM BRADBURY is the author of The Medieval Archer; he writes and lectures on battles and warfare in England and France in the middle ages. Medieval siege and battle
Does this sounds like a good battlefield game?
Ok it works like Battlefield 2/1942 or w/e, but in the medieval ages, the classs' would be like swordsman, archer, crossbowman, axe-user, and a monk/preist(medic) the fighting would work like the Elder Scrolls Obilivion Style fighting (if you don't know what that is i suggest you try it). The maps could just be from a open field to a siege of a castle, the vechiles could be different types of horses and there would be siege equipment (some requiring multiple men to operate).
Not yet -- but it has potential. First of all, can you describe your game in no more than 50 words, such that a wargamer would be able to differentiate it from similar games? Not the mechanics ... what's the "heart" of the game scenario? Why would someone play this instead of chess? What are the levels of control, skill vs luck, and the learning time needed to play the game at all, then to play it well?
You have your central idea well in your mind. Now build the story behind it, or the look & feel of the style. Check your mechanics for weak points. Does the game scale well -- for 2-10 players, for instance? Do the game mechanics drag on the speed of play (like AD&D started doing for some)?
Keep going, but keep that vision in mind -- otherwise, it's YetAnotherWarGame.
