Director John Lee Hancock (The Rookie), perhaps overly encumbered by the script's wealth of factual material, doesn't always maintain a strict timeline in depicting the 13-day siege. The complexities of the Texan-Mexican quarrel are never really addressed, and key historical figures -- such as Stephen Austin -- are either given short shrift or ignored altogether. But the Battle of the Alamo is vividly staged and incorporates both recently discovered facts and hotly contested suppositions -- among them the belief that Davy Crockett survived the battle. At times The Alamo is confusing, mostly due to choppy editing and inadequately elucidated motivations, but on balance it's a rousing historical drama depicting an event that even today continues to have surprising relevance to Americans. Re-teaming Dennis Quaid with John Lee Hancock, the director of 2002's The Rookie, The Alamo retells the story of the historic 1836 battle in the Texan War of Independence. Facing 4,000 Mexican troops, 186 Texan soldiers and volunteers -- including William Travis (Patrick Wilson), Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), and Jim Bowie (Jason Patric) -- retreat within the walls of the Alamo, a Franciscan mission that was converted into a military fort. Great things to see in Texas
Texas is a big state with a lot to offer the tourist. Here are just some of the great things to see when you come and visit.
Hemisfair Park is one of the most popular attractions and has been since it was built in for the World Fair in 1968. It can be found in San Antonio and promises to offer a great day out for all the family. The park is towered over by the 750 foot structure with an observation deck on top for you to observe the world around you. You will still find some of the original exhibitions from the World Fair over four decades ago as well as plenty of new additions.
Alamo is a must see for any visitor to Texas. This is where the some Texan patriots managed to fight off a Mexican army. You can find out quite a bit about local history when you visit here. This is a fitting tribute to Texan pride and courage.
Buffalo Gap Historical Village also offers another chance to travel back to the past. This is the place to find out all about life on the Texan frontier when great herds of buffalo wandered the area. This historical village offers plenty to see, and no visit will be complete without a meal at the world renowned Perini Ranch Steakhouse. If you want to extend your visit you will find lodgings in one of the local guesthouses.
Texas has some great beaches if you want unwind, enjoy some water sports or work on your tan. This state has over 600 miles of coastline along the Gulf of Mexico so it is a bit surprising that the area isn't more famous for its beaches; in fact there is as much on offer here as you would find in California. Crystal beach and Surfside beach are really popular.
The state has some great national parks. Big Bend National Park offers plenty of recreational activities. This area was once a home for many Native American tribes and you will still find evidence of their time here. Big Thicket National Park offers an amazing diversity of different animals and plants. LBJ National Historical Park is dedicated to the 36th president of the United States. The park allows you to see the complete history of this much admired figure.
The Lone Star Flight museum will be of great interest to those people who are interested in aviation. Visit the aviation hall of fame and you can even get some flight experience. The museum has regular air shows, but you will need to check ahead of time to see what is on.
The above is just a taste of some of the things on offer in Texas. This is a huge state so you will find no end of things to do. Selecting the best things on offer is an almost impossible task; especially as new attractions appear all the time. The best way to experience Texas is to just tour the state and see where you end up.
