Cast Iron Soldiers
Cleaning an antique metal statue?
I have an old statue of a mounted Civil War soldier that I found in the basement, quite dirty and rusted. It's hollow rather than solid cast iron. How can I clean it up without damaging it? How do I maintain it once it's clean? Thanks in advance!
if it's rusted it's already damaged to some point. If it is cast iron you can use a wire brush to brush it clean. If you afterwards wanted to have the black cast iron look the easiest would be to heat it up with a torch until it turns black (though not if mounted on a piece of wood or similar and this is optional. Don't do if you feel uncomfortable with the process). The black iron oxide which forms will also protect it to some degree from rust. Apart from that there is some spray from rust oleum which does protect iron from rust, it's something like an oil. It has to get reapplied occasionally, but works pretty well.
