Facts about Catherine Howard ( king henry VIII 5th wife)
Does anyone have any interesting facts about henry the eigths fifth wife?
We don't know the exact date of Catherine's birth, but it was probably between 1520 and 1525. We do know that she was very young when she married Henry VIII, who was nearly fifty, ailing and fat, with a suppurating and stinking wound on his leg.
She had had a lax upbringing, which contributed to her downfall. Henry fell in love with her, calling her his "Rose without a thorn". However, while she was married to him she did have an affair with Thomas Culpepper. Perhaps it's not surprising, given that she was married to a much older man who was not attractive at that time.
When she was caught and imprisoned, Henry did offer her a chance to save her head and be exiled or disgraced: she had a pre-contract with Francis Dereham. If she admitted to that, it would have meant that she had married Henry illegally, and Francis would be the cuckold, not the king. But Catherine swore that Francis had forced himself upon her; she was not very bright, and didn't realise that admitting an earlier pre-contract would save her life.
I add some sites which tell the whole story. Poor Catherine was so afraid that, the story goes, she ran screaming down the Long Gallery to the king at the chapel at Hampton Court to plead for her life, but was dragged back by guards. Her ghost is said to be heard to this day in the same place.

| | Catherine Howard $71.7 Catherine Howard (c. 1521 13 February 1542), also spelled Katherine or Katheryn, was the fifth wife of Henry VIII of England, and sometimes known by his reference to her as his rose without a thorn. Catherines birth date and place of birth are unknown (but occasionally cited as 1521 or 1524, possibly in Wingate, County Durham). She was the daughter of Lord Edmund Howard, a younger son of the 2nd Duke of Norfolk. This made her a first cousin of the Kings second wife, Anne Boleyn. Catherine married Henry VIII on 28 July 1540, at Oatlands Palace in Surrey, almost immediately after the annulment of his marriage to Anne of Cleves was arranged. However she was beheaded after less than two years of marriage to Henry on the grounds of treason, meaning adultery committed while married to the King. | | Lord Edmund Howard $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Lord Edmund Howard was born between 1472 and 1497 and died 19 March 1539. He was the third son of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and Elizabeth Tilney. He spent his youth hanging about the Court and in 1509 was listed as one of the nobles who organised the jousts for the joint coronation of Henry VIII of England and his new wife, Catherine of Aragon. Although his brother Edward was a close friend of the Kings and his brother Thomas became a dominating figure at court, Edmund seems not to have shared the Kings favour and seems to have been considered ineffectual. In 1531 his niece, Anne Boleyn, helped him find a position as Controller of Calais. Howards first marriage was to Jocasta Culpeper with whom he had about ten children, one of which was Catherine Howard, the fifth queen of Henry VIII of England. When his wife died in the late 1520s he went on to marry two other wives, both widows, by whom he was childless. He was dismissed from his post in Calais early in 1539 and died shortly afterwards, a year before his daughter became queen of England. David Starkey on Katherine Howard - Part one
who is your favorite of king henry VIII's wives? ?
everyone likes anne boleyn....i kind of like jane seymour better...i don't know why...i just do.
if you need a refresher, here's a list of all his wives:
katherine of aragon
anne boleyn
jane seymour
anne of cleves
catherine howard
catherine parr
thanks for answering!
for your information mr smarty pants, jane seymour was a very kind and sweet person, as was katherine of aragon and catherine parr. YOU must be confusing them with anne boleyn who, i must mention, was only ONE of Henry Tudor's wives.
also, keep in mind that henry was a KING and was as rich as hell. shoot, I would marry him if i could. to be a queen...oh yeeeeahh.
thank you, second and third answerer!
I would go with Jane Seymour. By all accounts she was the kindest and gentlest of his wives. She did her best to be a good mother to Elizabeth who was barely 3 when her mother Anne Boleyn was executed. Henry tried to get rid of all traces of Anne. He had Elizabeth declared illegitimate so that His and Jane's children would have a clear line to the succession. Elizabeth went from Princess Elizabeth to Lady Elizabeth. Still, Jane was very sweet, kind, and loving towards little Elizabeth, and did her best to soften Henry's attitudes towards her. I think Jane felt a little guilty that Anne was executed partially so Henry could marry her.
Furthermore, Jane also did her best to arrange a reconciliation between Henry and his teenage daughter Mary by his first wife.
Jane was a very softening influence on Henry. He still did bad things, but not as many as he would have otherwise.
