Who do you think was the best American Civil War General? Why?
Lee? Grant? Jackson? Meade? Longstreet? Sherman? someone else?
Not Lee, not Grant but Gen. William T. Sherman was the most modern thinking and progressive of all the generals of the war on BOTH sides ! His campaigns through the south are studied around the world by all intelligent armies to this very day. He realized that war was NOT a gentleman's game and took it to the required extreme in order to achieve victory. His is the only general's name that evokes hatred in the south to this very day ! Long live the Union !!!

Without a doubt, it was Robert Edward Lee.
President Theodore Roosevelt described General Robert E. Lee as "the very greatest of all the great captains that the English-speaking peoples have brought forth."
Prime Minister Winston Churchill wrote of Lee: "His noble presence and gentle, kindly manner were sustained by religious faith and an exalted character." Of his army, Churchill observed: "It was even said that their line of march could be traced by the bloodstained footprints of unshod men. But the Army of Northern Virginia 'carried the Confederacy on its bayonets' and made a struggle unsurpassed in history."
War-era Georgia Senator Ben Hill eloquently expressed a lasting Lee tribute: "He possessed every virtue of other great commanders without their vices. He was a foe without hate; a friend without treachery; a victor without oppression, and a victim without murmuring. He was a public officer without vices; a private citizen without reproach; a Christian without hypocrisy and a man without guile. He was a Caesar without his ambition; Frederick without his tyranny; Napoleon without his selfishness, and Washington without his reward. He was obedient to authority as a servant, and loyal in authority as a true king. He was gentle as a woman in life; modest and pure as a virgin in thought; watchful as a Roman vital in duty; submissive to law as Socrates, and grand in battle as Achilles!"

Jason, per the Media writing the history books these days, you have no idea how close you are to the truth.
Terri, I know he was in the command center that morning. I also know that Clarke frequently requested of both the Clinton and Bush administration action against Bin Laden. I know that the JCS argued against taking action against Bin Laden.
One reason is that Afghanistan tends to be the graveyard of large powers. Another pertains to the usual American reluctance to accept casualties for any reason (the Black Hawk Incident in Somalia was plenty to reinforce that feeling).
Setting the partisan stuff aside (because I suspect we're not going to find common ground) I'll say this instead.
After the American Civil War, Generals from both sides wrote memoirs in which they virutally refought the war, trying to address their own short comings, answer their critics, go after people they did not care for, push a point or two.
Clarke's book, historically, is important and historians will rely on it. However, I think over time historians will be just as interested in Clarke's motivations. I suspect they wonder about his two novels and ask themelves about his converting his experience in counter terrorism into a career as a novelist.
In other words, they'll take Clarke with a grain of salt.
