Civil War Generals
What year did the first cigar boxes come out? I know they used to be sold in bundles pre civil war.?
I heard a rumor that it was an invention of a civil war general so his troops could keep their smokes clean and dry in poor conditions, so I suppose this could be true as being a morale thing but I would think a box like that would be cumbersome when carried along with the tools of war. Does anyone have any thoughts or know anything about this?

Cigars were originally sold in bundles covered with pigs' bladders (with a pod of vanilla to improve the smell); then came the use of large chests, holding up to10,000 cigars. But in 1830, the banking firm of H.Upmann started shipping back cigars, for the use of its directors in London, in sealed cedar boxes stamped with the bank's emblem. When the bank decided to go, full-scale, into the cigar business, the cedar box took off as a form of packaging for all the major Havana brands, and all hand made cigars (though small quantities today are sometimes packages in cardboard cartons, and single cigars of many brands come in aluminum tubes lined with cedar). Cedar helps to prevent cigars from drying out and furthers the maturing process.

Civil War Generals Killed in the Line of Battle
Civil war generals?
I have to compare Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee.
Can anyone give me any similarities between them? Any websites good for this topic please do write them. thanks =]
The two gentlemen were quite different from each other in tactics, mannerisms, and backgrounds, but some commonalities are:
1. both attended West Point and became officers in the US Army prior to the Civil War
2. Both fought in the Mexican war, Grant as an infantry officer and Lee as an Engineer staff officer to Gen. Winfield Scott
3. Both married Southern women of comfortable means who owned slaves
4. Both rose from relative obsurity at the beginning of the war to become general-in-chiefs of their respective armies
5. Both started in opposite theaters (areas) of the war, and fought each other quite frequently for the remainder of the war.
6. Both had beards

Jason, per the Media writing the history books these days, you have no idea how close you are to the truth.
Terri, I know he was in the command center that morning. I also know that Clarke frequently requested of both the Clinton and Bush administration action against Bin Laden. I know that the JCS argued against taking action against Bin Laden.
One reason is that Afghanistan tends to be the graveyard of large powers. Another pertains to the usual American reluctance to accept casualties for any reason (the Black Hawk Incident in Somalia was plenty to reinforce that feeling).
Setting the partisan stuff aside (because I suspect we're not going to find common ground) I'll say this instead.
After the American Civil War, Generals from both sides wrote memoirs in which they virutally refought the war, trying to address their own short comings, answer their critics, go after people they did not care for, push a point or two.
Clarke's book, historically, is important and historians will rely on it. However, I think over time historians will be just as interested in Clarke's motivations. I suspect they wonder about his two novels and ask themelves about his converting his experience in counter terrorism into a career as a novelist.
In other words, they'll take Clarke with a grain of salt.
