Should enlisting in the US military be discouraged until the US changes it's foreign policy?

No more quagmires! Not against wars, just POINTLESS and NEEDLESS wars. Such as Spanish-American war, Korea, Viet-Nam, Iraq part II.

The USA should only fight wars that serve a purpose such as the Civil War, WWI, WWII, The First Iraq War. Wars to liberate the oppressed, free nations that have been taken over, and stop genocide.

The USA is in the wrong, but the Bush Administration will not admit it.

Considering that the military is an all-volunteer force, I find it pointless to discourage those that are adamant about "serving." They should still realize, however, that once they sign those recruitment papers, they are no longer individuals, but rather assets at the beck & call of the government.

But, I do agree that getting bogged down in these useless foreign quagmires with no clear goal in mind is just a waste of valuable resources.

Origins of World War I (2 of 2)

About how many casualties has amercia suffered in the civil war, WWI, and WWII?

what is the tomb of the unknown soldier what is it's signifigance to patriotism.

This is a link to a nice summary at LSU:

http://www.cwc.lsu.edu/cwc/other/stats/warcost.htm

Of course our population was smaller then, but the Revolution and War of 1812 had comparatively minor losses in actual numbers. Despite the TV and movie drama, an estimated 2.2% were killed in action (KIA).

The Civil War had an atrocious 184 thousand dead, with just shy of 5% KIA on both sides. The South's population was smaller, and their losses were greater.

WWI had 53 thousand Americans KIA at a rate of just over 1%, more died from influenza and other diseases than from bullets and bombs.

WWII had over 292 thousand Americans dead, just under 2% of troops KIA. So while it was indeed devastating and horrible, the proportional body count was not always the way TV and movies depict, although there were indeed places where units were more than decimated.

Korean war dead was at 33 thousand and Vietnam with some 47 thousand combat deaths, though the total body bag count was above 50 thousand. For all the bad press, only about one-half of one percent of our troops died in Vietnam and the KIA percentage was only one-tenth a percent higher in Korea.

As for our Iraq War experience, remember in the current fight, by far the most of our troops were killed trying to keep the peace after the Iraqi army had surrendered or disbanded. (After our Civil War, some of the Southerners did the same, it was not safe for a Union soldier to be alone in the south for several years)

In the Gulf War, however, the American deaths were only about 148, the KIA figure is essentially zero, the share was so small. Meanwhile, Iraq suffer almost a quarter-million losses in their military.
