A Brief Look At Medieval Weapons

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the words medieval ages? Perhaps you think about the magnificent castles portrayed in books or movies, or perhaps you think about knights in shiny armor. Whatever it may be that attracts you to this specific time in history, one thing is certain. The medieval ages are often misunderstood and categorized as a period of time which had little to no change in technology, daily life, or any other kind of important development. However, the medieval ages were a period of time of great development in all this areas, especially in weapons. Below you will find some of the weapons used in this fascinating period of time.

On of the best known things about the medieval ages are its weapons which where, most often than not, very efficiently. The weapons used in the medieval ages where constantly improved to improve their efficiency during war time. The medieval era was a time where knights, warriors and barbarians displayed their various weapons, each unique, and sometimes complex, in their own way.

• Daggers and knives- This weapons where commonly used during the medieval ages. Some of the daggers and knives used during this period of time where the anelace, baselard, cinquedea, katara, machete, mercy giver poniard, rondel, and stiletto.

• Swords-. Although you may think daggers, knives, and swords are all the same, they are not. In contrast to daggers and knives, swords are bigger and deadlier. • Blunt weapons- Blunt weapons are consider somewhat simple and primarily and are designed to inflict blunt trauma on their target. For this reason, blunt weapons are club-like and they rely on the strength of the user. Some of the blunt weapons used during the medieval ages where clubs, flail, mace, flanged mace, maul, morning star, quarterstaff, war harmer, bec de corbin, horseman's pick and bludgeon.

• Ranged Weapons- Ranged weapons where used to inflict damage to an opposite team via long distance. Some of the ranged weapons used in the medieval ages where javelins, slings, dart, bows and arrows, catapults, ballistas, and trebuchets.

• Warships- Most often than not, individuals needed to attack by sea rather than by land. Hence, they used warships such as caravel, carrack, cog, fire ship, hellburners, galleon, gallery, junk, longship, lou chuan, and qiao chuan.

Although individuals in the medieval ages used weapons to insure their victory in times of conflict and war, they also used animals in war to increase their winning possibilities. Some of this animals included camels, dogs, horses, destrier, courser, and even elephants.

The medieval era was a time of great warfare, as a result their weapon history is long and, more often than not, bloody. However, the medieval era influenced and changed the way weapons where viewed and created for ever.
