Crimean War

How was the Crimean War significant to British?
This poem called...The Charge of Light Brigade...im studying but I hear its based in the Crimean War...a war i've never heard of...Well i know the British were in it and all i would like to know is how it was significant, or benefitted them if you will, to the British.
The Crimean war was basically an attempt to keep the Russians from expanding their influence. The British were not really prepared to fight the war, but still shipped thousands of troops to the Crimea. They didn't have enough food or supplies, and the medical care was so bad that many more soldiers died from disease than from wounds.
The Charge of the Light Brigade was during the battle of Balaclava. The British were attempting to capture the port of Sevastopol, so that they could bring in supplies by ship. They elected to lay siege, but in doing so they extended their lines. The Russian commander decided to attack.
There were three major events during this battle. The most famous was the attack of the Light Brigade. Due to mis-communications and petty disputes between the British commanders, the Light Brigade launched an attack along a valley floor. Their goal were the Russian artillery almost a mile up the valley. But not only did they have to face the fire from those guns, but the Russians had guns placed along the sides of the valley. In short, the Light Brigade took fire from three sides. Some of the Brigade actually made it to the guns at the end of the valley, but were captured or forced to retreat. The Light Brigade took horrific casualties and were ruined as a fighting force.
The lesser known engagements include the charge of the Heavy Brigade. Russian calvary had advanced and taken a high ground position. The Heavy Brigade charged uphill and managed to force the Russians back. This action would have won them a lot more aclaim had it not been for the disastorous Light Brigade's attack. The third action was an infantry attack by the Russian infantry against "the thin red line" of the 93rd Highlands regiment. Tennyson's poem concentrates only on the Light Brigade though, and brought immortality to that battle.
Overall, the Crimea war was meaningless, and gained the winners little. It's biggest influence on the British was to make the military authorities aware of how "rusty" their procedures and training were.

This book details the gallant yet suicidal Charge of the Light Brigade, now immortalised in film: in the words of Tennyson, `Into the Valley of Death rode the Six Hundred`. It relates the reports made by the first real war correspondant, William Russell of the London Times - reports which served only to highlight the army`s problems - and memorialises the heroic deeds of Florence Nightingale, who struggled to save young men from the most formidable enemy in the Crimean War: not the Russians, but cholera. |

If you are talking about general dynamics of the Russian home policy in the 19th century then your original assumption is wrong. The very Crimean War (along with some other factors) became the incentive for dramatic liberalisation of the Russian life in the second half of the 19th century – emancipation of serfs (1861), judicial reforms (1864) with introduction of a penal code (introduction of jury, banishing of capital punishment etc.), introduction of a new system of the local self-governing etc. For quick reading see the link below.
