War British Grenadiers

The Redcoats.................?
i got a few question lol
Did they always use the British Grenadiers song wile marching into battle? When was the song made? Was there any reason why they chose Red? Or did they just keep it that way from the English Civil war?
Cheers!
Soldiers of all era most often choose bawdy drinking signs to bolster their drive and so it was British troops who smartly marched to a variety of tunes but most often 'The Grenadiers' Song which dates to at least early 1600s, see link below. Red was adopted for several reasons; then unlike now, on the battlefield one had to be able to tell their soldiers aparts from the enemy and even in the smoke and haze of a fight red stands out, secondly red dye is cheaper than many other options and even then yellow had a bad conotation. Also Cromwell especially thought that Red looked 'smart' and snappy. But the main reason was the visibility factor and in time the fact that a wall of red did inspired fear in the enemy.

""""The Redcoats are known to have played "The British Grenadiers" on the battlefield at Brandywine in September of 1777, so presumably it was played on many other occasions. Its origins can be traced back to a song entitled "The New Bath" found in Playford's dance books from the 1600's. It is first found in America in William Williams' 1775 manuscript, printed in Pawtucket RI. Today it is one of the most recognizable regimental marches and is still a much-loved patriotic British song.
Some talk of Alexander,
And some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander,*
And such great names as these.
But of all the world's great heroes,
There's none that can compare
Chorus
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row,
To the British Grenadier.
Those heroes of antiquity
Ne'er saw a cannon ball
Or knew the force of powder
To slay their foes withal.
But our brave boys do know it,
And banish all their fears.
Chorus:
Sing tow, row, row, row, row, row,
For the British Grenadier.
Whene'er we are commanded
To storm the palisades
Our leaders march with fusees*
And we with hand grenades.
We throw them from the glacis*
About the enemies' ears.
Chorus:
Sing tow, row, row, row, row, row,
The British Grenadiers.
And when the siege is over,
We to the town repair
The townsmen cry, "Hurrah, boys*
Here comes a Grenadier!"
Here come the Grenadiers, my boys,
Who know no doubts or fears!
Chorus:
Then sing tow, row, row, row, row, row,
The British Grenadiers.
Then let us fill a bumper*
And drink a health to those
Who carry caps and pouches,
And wear the louped clothes*.
May they and their commanders
Live happy all their years
Chorus:
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row,
For the British Grenadiers."""

"-----------------The red coat has changed throughout its history from being a British infantryman's ordinary uniform to a ceremonial garment. Its official history begins on February 1645, when the Parliament of England passed the New Model Army ordinance. The new English Army (there was no 'Britain' until the union with Scotland in 1707) was formed of 22,000 men, divided into 12 foot regiments of 1200 men each, 11 horse regiments of 600 men each, one dragoon regiment of 1000 men, and the artillery, consisting of 50 guns. The infantry regiments wore coats of Venetian red with white facings. However, the uniforms of the Yeoman of the Guard (formed 1485) and the Yeomen Warders (also formed 1485) have traditionally been in Tudor red and gold and indicate that the tradition of English Infantry wearing red coats may long predate the formation of the New Model Army.
Oliver Cromwell wrote to Sir William Spring in 1643: "I had rather have a plain, russet-coated captain that knows what he fights for, and loves what he knows, than that which you call a gentleman and is nothing else" (Oxford Dictionary of Quotations)
The adoption and continuing use of red by most English soldiers after the Restoration (1660) appears to have been a historical accident, aided by the relative cheapness of red dyes. There is no basis for the historical myth that red coats were favoured because they did not show blood stains. Blood does in fact show on red clothing as a black stain. ""
Note the cheapness of RED is evidenced by the 'ole Red Barn' of Colonial American Fame - - - ask an artist but many natural substances lend themselves to making red dyes, paints etc.
