baseball player slides into third base with initial velocity of 7.30 m/s. If coef. of kinetic friction?
is found to be .37 how far does he slide before coming to a rest.
I know this is an easy problem I just can't seem to figure it out, if someone could help me with a generla formula and show how you come up with the answer that would be much appreciated. Thanks
1) Step one should always be a free body diagram in this case it would be the force of friction in the negative x direction, and the force of gravity acting down of course.
2) step two is nearly always the same as well, write out your equations of motion for each dimension, this case we really are y concerned with the x direction.and y direction.
The sum of forces in the x = ma = -force of friction
sum of forces i nthe y =gravity-N=0 ,mg=N, Normal force=mg
--note that the sum of forces in the y = 0 because there is no net accerleration in the y direction for this problem, this woudl change for a slope problem.
3) now we need some physics. We know that force of friction is equal to coefficient of frictions times normal force, normal force is just going to be g*m=, so now we can plus this back into the summatio nof corces in the x to find a
4) now we have a, and we also knwo that vinitial is 7.3 and vfinal is 0, and we are looking for x, there is a formula that should be in your book to use with all these.
The way i explained ths is a bit overkill for this problem but i hope you canuse this approach for other problems too.
