British Army history- please help?
I was wondering about British Army uniform. I would like to know, what is/ was the uniform that the soldiers wore in the film 'Zulu' called? Red tunic, white sun helmet. black or navy trouders with a red stripe down the side.
Do any regiments still wear this for ceremonial duties? If so, which ones? I have heard a rumour that any soldier is entitled to wear this uniform, as it is a type of 'generic smart uniform'. True?

The Uniform that you reference is a form of the british army uniform at the time. This has evolved overtime, as all military uniforms have, it is very much related to one of the current dress uniforms that are worn by some in the british army.
I would not say it is a 'generic smart uniform' as there are many different dress uniforms within the british army depending on what unit, corp, rank, and other factors.

do british army officers have to pay for kit?
i have herd british army officers have to pay for their own kit? In particular ceremonial kit? Is this true?
No they don't pay for their own kit, even ceremonial kit, they are not allowed to wear any non-issued items.
British officers don't usually say hehe!
