Sudan was colonised probably by the Ottomans in the 17th century. Britain was uninterested in the Sudan as it had no apparent resources. Had the Mahdi not killed General Gordon, they would have left it alone.
The Mahdi freed Sudan from Egypt but in doing so brought about British conquest. Had he no done so the French probably would have expanded their North African empire to include it. The British were primarily involved in stamping out slavery and did not develop the Sudan significantly.

On a side note - British tea was actually cheaper than American tea, at the time. It was a demonstration to show contempt for the crown.
