Hebrew tradition/customs: Is there any truth to the circulating e-mail regarding Yahushua folding the cloth?
Is there some custom where whatever was being worked on, whether a project, or even a meal, that a cloth was to be folded up and placed to the side indicating that "The Master" was to return??? I've read from others that it's NOT true...
No, this is one of those internet rumors spread by well-meaning people who have gone too far. There is no such Jewish tradition, applicable socially OR to the Teacher-Student relationship. HOWEVER, a similar tradition exists within Western culture between servants and Masters; another tradition involves the placing the napkin on the plate to indicate that the eater was finished, but when s/he planned to continue eating, the napkin was left beside the plate. But again, these were WESTERN traditions.
I believe this Western tradition was misapplied as also being a Jewish tradition and this gave rise to the myth. A contributing factor is that several widely used Scriptural translations use the word "napkin" at John 20:7. Actually, the word should not be translated "napkin," but "head cloth." Further, the Greek word translated as "folded" is actually BETTER translated as "rolled together." All of this gives us the picture of Yeshua's burial cloths in situ as if His body had miraculously dematerialized while still wrapped -- which is what happened.
