Horse Rider
Im in my mid 20's and Im only an intermediate horse rider, am I way to old to think about competing?
I've always loved horses and riding, but only as Im older now am I in a financial position to really start. Is it like other athletics where you must start as a child?
You are prime! It's true starting young can help you advance faster but being an adult is perfect. Your bones are done fusing, your brain is at full capacity, and your able to navigate and preform better than a child would. Adult riders are able to project decisions better than child riders and there for do better in competition. More is expected of adults however. The only disadvantage adults have is fear. Because problem solving abilities have peeked, you comprehend 110% the danger, the consequences, etc. This is the only thing that I find hold many adult riders back. Often times I find riders in their 20-40's the best of the best, regardless if they started young or not.
As for competition, you just as good. Most divisions except open will segregate children from adults. All shows (with exception of high level competition) have adult beginner, novice, maiden, etc. so you move up in the ranks based on skill and with a class of peers equal to that.
Actually i find your choice to start when financially able too one of the smartest I've seen someone actually do in years. not just talk about it, but actually wait and do it. One huge tip though is to find a ARIA certified trainer who is use to teaching adults. Sometimes, trainers are so use to training children they modify their techniques into something a child can reason, but may not relate to an adult. Just check for that, no adult wants to be treated as a child. ARIA trainers are also insured and backed up by the worlds biggest equestrian foundations and competitions.

if i want to overtake a horse rider i have to do what?
do i have to put on my indicator ? Do i have to overtake it on the outside or do i have to overtake it on the inside?might i have to ask for authorisation ? it can be any one of these or more than 1.
do you mean how do you pass another rider? in an arena with both of you going the same direction you always pass on the inside. be sure to call out by saying "inside". if you are going in opposite directions then you pass left shoulder to left shoulder (which still ends up being the inside).

Sandy – I thoroughly enjoyed reading the updates on the July clinic. Makes me want to pack up early and get over there so I'll be prepared for the August seminar. I am SOOOooooo ready to get out of “dodge”. Our temps have been very hot and muggy with an abundance of those little face flies that fly up your nose, into your eyes & mouth and around your head. They make horse and rider very cranky but today we have overcast skies and a little rain — YEAH. Bob and I decided that we'd go on a long, conditioning trail ride even if it was a virtual downpour — at least the bugs wouldn't be out. Keep having fun and be safe. Kath
