How do I make a piece of Machine Embroidery into an Iron On?

Hi I have a machine embroidery design that I want to make into an iron on patch. 1. What kind of stabilizer should I embroider the design upon? 2. What kind of backing should I use to turn it into an iron on?

Thank you
Hi thanks for your answer. I would do that except the nearest fabric/sewing store is 100 miles away, which is why I am asking someone to explain it to me here. Thank you. Kathy

You can go to any arts and crafts stores and they will have a while aisle full of that stuff. To make sure you get the right type for the thing you're wanting to iron on ask someone. The people at the Michael's store are very helpful.

is war machine iron man's friend?

i've never read the comics, so please don't think i'm stupid. i know in the movie the black guy was his friend, so that makes war machine in number two his friend right? if so, does anyone have a guess as to who the bad guy(s) will be in the iron man sequel? if ya name a character, can you please describe the character...

Well in the beginning War Machine is his friend, but towards the end War Machine betrays Iron Man.

  1. Hi Bob,

You say in your title for the first post of this “Local Food DOES NOT Use Less Fossil Fuel!” The fact is that there exists local food that does use less fossil fuel. This proves that not only can it exist but that it does exist. If you want to argue that there exist some local farms which are less efficient or inefficient then you need to restate your thesis.

I definitely agree with what I think is your real thesis “Some Locally Produced Food Does Not Use Less Fossil Fuel [than Big Ag]” but that is totally different than the title you used. It is important not to generalize. It creates confusion, myths and all that bad stuff by getting in the way of accuracy. From reading your blog I get the impression you're trying to cut through the fog and cultivate some clear thinking on these topics – a goal we share.

I do totally agree with you that things can be done more efficiently. We should all strive for that. I'm always looking for how we can do better in everything that we do in our home, our family, our business, our farm, etc. It is an ever moving goal.

    Some myths to bust:

“You need lots of big iron to farm” – Many folks are doing without the tractors at all or with minimal machinery. We have a tractor and it is a wonderful tool but we only average about 2 hours a week on it. That's about two gallons of diesel per week. When we need it nothing else quite does the job but it really isn't using much fuel. About half of its time is keeping the snow cleared and delivering hay to the livestock (round bales) in the winter. Much of the other half is making it so the future is more efficient such as creating terraces, roads, shelters, etc. The vast majority of what we do is by hand and involves no fossil fuels. Yes, there is additional “big iron” in the machinery that harvests and transports the hay we buy but it again is not all that great and far less than what Big Ag uses. We don't need 400 hp tractors nor 50 smaller tractors to farm.

“Animals need heated barns” – They don't. Heated barns lead to enclosed barns, wasting energy, increase in respiratory problems due to dust and fumes, etc. Both the animals and the farmers need good ventilation and lots of fresh air to be healthy. Yes, in our cold climate there is a slow down in production, especially with chickens, during that darkest coldest time of the year but one improvement to consider is that with local one should also consider seasonality of foods. These ideas go hand in hand. Speaking of heating, if one wants to heat a space, look into using the animals. We're building a greenhouse which will be eventually heated by pigs. Not by burning methane which robs us of nutrients but by using the body heat of the pigs.

“Pigs and chickens aren’t ruminants. They can’t eat just grass and survive.” – I've heard many people say things like that but pigs and chickens can and do eat pasture/hay here. In fact, they thrive on it. Chickens supplement their grass diet with insects – this is why I keep a lot of free ranging hens around – it is part of our pest and parasite control. I don't feed them any grain except in the winter. They thrive during the warm months and produce a generous bonus of eggs. In the winter and late fall I find I need to supplement their diet with commercial feed (less desirable choice) or meat (something I have plenty of) to replace the insects they forage during the spring, summer and early fall.

I have raised three batches of pigs solely on pasture/hay as part of our experimenting. They take a couple of months longer to reach market weight and are leaner. They thrive and grow very nicely in the warmer months. Winter is certainly harder. It is quite feasible to raise pigs just on pasture. Normally we also feed dairy which is delivered to us daily from a local cheese maker just over the mountain. The dairy is kept out of the waste stream – the cheese company would have to expend the energy getting rid of it anyways so this is a win-win situation.

Pasture/hay is low in calories and some key nutrients, notably lycine which the dairy supplies for the pigs. The dairy also offers additional calories making year round pasture/hay plus dairy a viable diet for pigs to thrive on. The pasture/hay plus dairy make up 97% of our pig's diet by dry matter measure and the pasture/hay makes up the vast majority of that dry matter. We also grow some pumpkins, squash, beets, turnips and such beyond the needs of our family's table to supplement the late fall forage going into winter when the pigs switch over to hay from pasture. The chickens, sheep, ducks and geese also like veggies as the pastures wane. All that is grown without fossil fuels. The pigs are mob grazed to till up the soil. The chickens are mob grazed to disk and weed the soil. The poultry are used to weed certain crops. We plant by hand. The fertilizer all comes from the livestock. No big iron and no petroleum.

Occasionally we get a little expired bread from a local bakery (high in calories – good for winter) and a little boiled barley (sugars are extracted for beer leaving protein, minerals & fiber) from a local brew pub. With 200 pigs those don't really go very far. The bread and bareley only make up a tiny part (2.7%) of our pigs' diet. We use these primarily for treats to train the pigs to come when we call, load up the chute for the trip to market, creep into the weaner paddock and such.

Recently we've also gotten apple pumace from a local cider maker who is right along our weekly delivery route. If farmers don't take the crushed apples he has to pay to have it hauled away to the dump or all the way up to Intervale using a lot of fossil fuels. We pickup the apple, boiled barley and bread when we're passing by for other reasons – generally on our delivery route – so there are no miles dedicated to those things and thus no additional fossil fuel use. Bob's equation already dedicated those miles to the delivery of the meat so they can't be counted twice by assigning them to the apples, barley and bread. Our van gets virtually the same mpg loaded with them as unloaded and we generally pickup after we've delivered for the day so it balances. All of those things are being kept out of the waste stream which is a net positive. Fossil fuels aren't the only issue.

The point of all that is there are a lot of high quality food resources which are a net positive to use, involve zero net fossil fuels, have a negative carbon footprint and save you money to boot. One can go with 100% pasture, making some sacrifices on production speed and seasonality or balance pasture/hay with the above to produce a superior meat at a lower cost which helps to make up for the lower volume and “efficiency” of small farms.

Bob, let's keep questioning the status quo, researching better ways and spreading the word of how farming can improve. The web with blogs is a great way to reach millions of people with your ideas as are discussion groups and writing books and articles for newspapers and magazines. There are a lot of people out there who are experimenting with pushing this envelope. There are good karma reasons as well as good selfish business reasons – less fossil fuels means lower production and distribution costs which means more money sticks to our fingers. That makes farming more viable and means you can quit your day job sooner.

    Cheers,

    -Walter
