Marine Corps

Marine Corps?
I am a high school student and planning to join te Marine Corps after I graduate. I haven't talk to a recruiter yet but I will. Since I don't usually have Internet access to research, can anybody explain to me the steps being a Marine? ( I mean like what do you do after you signed up, and when do you take health, blood test and physical test, etc, and how long it takes from the time I signed up till I can go to boot camp)? Also some advices wouldn't hurt.
All heath test are done at MEPS. You will do an IST (initial strength test) before you leave for boot camp. This is a very basic test to give you a base line of where you are physically. When you leave for boot camp will depend on what your MOS (your job in the Marines) will be. Some schools for example infantry 0311, are not more than a month or two long. These have classes that start all the time so you can leave for boot camp sooner. The more technical a school is, i.e. helicopter mechanic, the longer the school, some up to a year long. When the next class starts will go a long way to determine when you go to boot camp. The reason behind this is to get you into your school as soon as possible after boot camp and MCT. You wouldn't want to graduate and then spend 3 months doing working parties waiting for your school to start!
As far as advice goes, the most important thing you take to boot camp with you is a POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE!! Start telling yourself that you WILL NOT FAIL. You WILL EARN your EGA. YOU WILL walk across that grinder and become a US MARINE.
Good luck to you devil pup. Any more questions, shoot me an e-mail. Semper Fi.

US Marine Corps - Making a Marine (Part 1)
How is Marine Corps boot camp tougher than the other branches?
Someone told me that in order of toughest to easiest for boot camps, it goes in the order of Marine Corps, Army, Navy, then Air Force.
How exactly is boot camp for the Marine Corps different and much tougher than the boot camp for the other branches? I thought they all teach you the same thing.
I just love the fact that in order to compare something to Marine Corps training people have to go to other branches Special forces units.
That alone tells you the difference between Marine Corps BOOTCAMP and the other branches bootcamp.
Marine Corps Bootcamp is longer than any other bootcamp, Involves more discipline. the little things matter. You are not allowed to use the words I, Me, You, Him you must refer to yourself as this recruit. in order to just speak like to use the head (bathroom) you have to ask for permission to speak then the question. it would go like this. "Sir this rectuit request permission to speak to Drill instructor SSGT wilson Sir" they would say speak or go away if they say speak then you get to ask your question and it would go like this "Sir this recruit request permission to make a head call Sir"
Every second of your day is spent sitting standing or laying at attention.
The Rifle Qualification is the hardest in any branch shooting at targets at 200, 300 & 500 yards. Real targets not pop ups that dirt can knock down
the phisical fitness requirements are higher than anyother branch.
There are no smoke breaksm there are no soda no liberty, no breaks. You are allowed one phone call during your time in boot camp and their is one visitors day during the 13 weeks you are there.
Ask any marine about the history of the marine corps and they can tell you anything you can ask without having to look it up.
I remember running past the navy's bootcamp in san diego on our afternoon run (you know the one after the morning run) and seeing the navy recruits sitting in bleachers at a class with their shirts off laying back with their feet proped up.
I also remember sitting in a quanset hut in 110 degree weather at attention in a class and Drill instructors walking around with field phones and if you fell asleep they would touch the wires to your neck or ears and crank the phone shocking you awake.

the marine corps will never change unlike the army has. We stick to our traditions and thats what makes us great. Why does every marine have a sticker in his rear window? You dont see every army guy doing it… Its because we love what we do and we are the most disciplined group of individuals in the world. heres a clip you might find interesting watch it

Afghanistan
I. Copy Of Current Event: Reporting from Phoenix – Speaking to more than 5,500 veterans, President Obama on Monday renewed his commitment to dismantling Al Qaeda in Afghanistan — a struggle he said was “fundamental to the defense of our people” — and offered assurances that his healthcare overhaul would not touch veterans' medical benefits.
“This is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity,” Obama told the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars conference — cautioning that the insurgency would not be defeated overnight. “Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which Al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans.”
With U.S. forces scheduled to leave Iraq by 2011, Obama pledged that in the future, he would only send service members “into harm's way when it is absolutely necessary.”
“When I do,” the president said, “it will be based on good intelligence and guided by a sound strategy. I will give you a clear mission, defined goals and the equipment and support you need to get the job done” — a clear criticism of the George W. Bush administration's actions in Iraq.
The appearance in Phoenix gave the president a chance to tout recent White House efforts to modernize the military, streamline veterans' medical care and eliminate wasteful military spending.
He ridiculed House plans to buy a costly new presidential helicopter. “Maybe you've heard about this — among its other capabilities, it would let me cook a meal while under nuclear attack,” Obama said, drawing laughter. “Now, let me tell you something. If the United States of America is under nuclear attack, the last thing on my mind will be whipping up a snack.”
The president praised his campaign rival, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), as a partner in efforts to scale back unnecessary defense programs.
Obama also noted that the administration was moving to end the controversial stop-loss troop deployment policy, expand the Army and Marine Corps ranks to give service members more time between deployments, and provide additional helicopters, protective gear and armored vehicles for troops in Afghanistan.
Earlier this year, Congress authorized $1.4 billion to build nursing homes and extended care facilities for veterans, upgrade medical centers and hire an additional 1,500 workers to handle medical claims.
The president has proposed adding $25 billion in funding for the Veterans Affairs Department over the next five years, which he said would be the largest increase in three decades. The money would help create rural VA clinics across the country, speed the processing of health claims, and expand care for post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injuries faced by veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Obama said caring for veterans with those ailments was a “defining purpose of my budget — billions of dollars for more treatment and mental health screening to reach our troops on the front lines, and more mobile and rural clinics to reach veterans back home.”
Those moves drew praise, even from several veterans who voted for McCain.
“He has given us what we need for our veterans, and he is letting the generals handle Afghanistan,” said Army veteran David Cauley, a Republican from Larchwood, Iowa.
But, Cauley said, he did not support the president's healthcare overhaul — a feeling shared by a number of audience members, as well as protesters outside the Phoenix Convention Center. One cause for alarm, some older veterans said, was the plan to help pay for the overhaul by making Medicaid and Medicare programs more efficient.
“I'm kind of concerned about what is going to happen with my Medicare,” said Air Force veteran Henry M. Edwards, 78, of San Diego.
Alluding to what he has called misinformation surrounding the debate, the president tried to soothe concern.
“Let me say this — one thing that reform won't change is veterans' healthcare,” Obama said. “No one is going to take away your benefits. That's the truth.”

Why? To tell them the war plans and about their future
III. Reflection:
Text to Self: This article reminds me of many things in my life. It reminds me of when you come home from school after you got into a fight you didn’t start and have to explain it to your parents. You are in trouble, but they understand because they want you to defend yourself if you have to. They also have already been in that situation when they were my age. They just want you to protect yourself as long as you don’t start your fights.
Text to Text: This reminds me of the first Narnia book. The little peter kid was going to be king. He was so young that I wouldn’t think that he could lead the kingdom. Many people who had been in the army for a long time would be worried that he could not do his job. Then he gave this big heroic speech and everything ended up fine. That’s just the book, but who knows?
Text to World: This reminds me of many things that have happened in the world’s history. King Tut was only 10 when he started to lead Egypt. He must have done a decent job because they didn’t fall from power during his short reign. He was able to keep his kingdom afloat against everyone’s opinions of inexperience towards him. He ended up being assassinated in the end of it all, but he did his job well.
We recently had a mock terrorist take over that was really good, especially when the hostages fought back/escaped.
We have a minefield exercise that is designed to increase situational awareness and teamwork. Sometimes the class "dies" and sometimes they make it.
Obviously, we teach customs/courtesies and military history but we also teach managment techniques and leadership, i.e.decision making, ethics, etc.
Regarding rank: AFROTC does not use enlisted rank; High School does but at the college level, its strictly officer rank.
