British Regimental Organization in the American Revolutionary Period?
What was the organizaztion of British Regiments of Foot in American Revolutionary Period. The part I'm confused about is the relationship between the battalion and the parent regiment. Did the regiments have supply, artillery or other elements? Or was the regiment disparit from the battalion only in command elements?
Okay, I am shooting from the hip here but I am reasonably familiar with American regimental organization of the time and I know the Brit organization is similar as the American organization was based on the Brit.
A regiment usually had about 10 companies with a paper strenght of about 100 men each. (I a company had half that fit for duty at any moment it was lucky.) Each company had a Captain a Lieutenant and an Ensign.
The regiment had three field officers - a Colonel, a lieuteant colonel and a major. In the Brit Army the colonel was the proprieter or "owner" of the regiment who got it recruited and equipped. Colonels were usually wealthy noblemen who are doing a "favor" for the king by providing a regiment for his use. Colonels also rarely were with their regiments in the field.
The lieutenant colonel ran the day to day business of the regiment for the colonel and he was assisted by the major. There was also a few staff officers the most commonly found are adjutants, quartermasters, surgeons and commissaries.
As to battalions the battalion was not a formal structure as it is today. A battalion could simply refer the the regiment on the battlefield or a regiment could sub-divide into two battalions (under the lieutenant colonel and major) if the tactical situation demanded it. As a general rule, regiments fought as intact entities.
No, regiments did not have their own artillery as that was a seperate branch of service.
I haven't read it yet but you may want to check out "The Organization of the British Army in the American Revolution" by Edward E. Curtis. Im sure it has a lot more information on the subject.

How are British students taught about the Revolutionary War?
In the U.S. we learn that the British weren't giving the colonists their basic rights, and were taxing them too high, ect. It makes it seem like the British are the bad guys and the the colonists are the good guys in the war. Is this what British students are taught? Is there a bias when it comes to being taught about the Rev. War depending on where you are?

Although it is touched upon, in terms of revolutions we deal in greater detail with those that had a larger effect on the history of our country and Europe - such as our own (the Civil War) and that of the French - plus you have to remember that Britain has a vast amount of history to cover and in the grand scheme of it the Revolutionary War is only a minor incident within, especially during that time period. The War of 1812 is barely mentioned, despite it being far more successful for the British than the earlier conflict.
What we do learn are the basics, the points of view and political elements of both sides, the major players, the trade, the actual tax amounts levied and the eventual triggers that set it in motion as well as those who were really doing the fighting on behalf of the Crown.
It is entirely left to the student to make their own decision on who was "right" or "wrong", taking into account the political and social mores of the time.
