Portrait shots & digitally substituting backgrounds?
Hi,
I'd like a summary start to finish on the equipment and technique for taking the best portrait shots and substituting the background for a different photo (e.g. potentially making a picture that looks impossible e.t.c.)
I'm guessing a matt white background with high reflectance, and some studio lights to light up the background, and of course the subject appropriately. Photoshop, maybe with a plugin, all in a few minutes work?
What I'm most concerned about is (no doubt always the biggest problem) hair. Back-lit and not. Especially considering no lens or camera is perfect - I'll be using a prime lens but still, I'm not clear on the best way of getting top quality results. With an ideal set-up, equipment and software, how much work is involved per picture?

The technique is called Chroma Key. They use a Chroma Blue or a Chroma Green background. Those are colors which are generally not otherwise found, That way the bkg can easily be selected & dropped out & replaced. That's how thwy make the weather people in TV appear as though they are infront of a map.
You want to flight it so there are no shadows around the subject so you can more easily select the bkg.
