Britain Knights Round

Why does Prince Valiant speak with an American drawl?
Why does Prince Valiant speak with an American drawl? According to the film starring young Robert Wagner he was a Viking serving as a squire to Sir Gawain in King Arthur's Knights of the Round able.
(Come to think of it he wouldn't even have been speaking English, he would've been speaking British aka Old Welsh. At that time the English had not yet made incursions into Western Britain.)
Robert G, I've just said they didn't speak old English or any other kind of English for that matter. They spoke old WELSH. Sheesh, some people!
Baltazar: Yes, you're correct. Brittany used to be called little britain to distinguish it from the british isles which were called 'prydain mawr' (great britain). Before the germanics (the english) arrived britain was populated only by celts and only celtish languages (welsh, irish, scots) were spoken here.
Celtish, this may come as a shock, but Prince Valiant was an American comic strip character. Thus any accent from Bronx to Cajun would be historically accurate.

| | Matter of Britain $140.19 The Matter of Britain is a name given collectively to the legends that concern the Celtic and legendary history of Great Britain, especially those focused on King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. The 12thcentury French poet Jean Bodel created the name in the following lines of his epic Chanson de Saisnes: Ne sont que III matieres a nul homme atandant, De France et de Bretaigne, et de Rome la grant. (translation: There are but 3 literary cycles that no man should be without: the matter of France, of Britain, and of great Rome. ) The name distinguishes and relates the Matter of Britain from the mythological themes taken from classical antiquity, the matter of Rome, and the tales of the paladins of Charlemagne and their wars with the Moors and Saracens, which constituted the matter of France. While Arthur is the chief subject of the Matter of Britain, other lesserknown legendary history of Great Britain, including the stories of Brutus of Britain, King Cole, King Lear, and Gogmagog, is also included in the Matter of Britain: see Legendary kings of the Britons. Each of the five specials in this box set, however, does exactly that. Contents include; QUEST FOR KING ARTHUR, ANCIENT MYSTERIES: CAMELOT, KNIGHTS AND ARMOR, KING ARTHUR: HIS LIFE AND LEGENDS and QUEST FOR THE HOLY GRAIL. |

This special collection presents five original specials that will help separate fact from fiction. Quest for King Arthur examines the tantalizing historical facts behind the story of King Arthur and his band of deathless heroes and illuminates the contemporary quest by researchers to establish if the 6th-century warlord truly existed. King Arthur: His Life and Legends offers stunning recreations and abundant images from centuries past, to explore the social, political and emotional factors that have made Arthur's story so dear to Western culture. Ancient Mysteries: Camelot takes the viewer on a magical quest through England and Wales in search of Lancelot, Guinevere, Merlin, and Excalibur in an attempt to uncover evidence that Arthur s battles really took place. Knights and Armor traces the history of arms and armor with an up-close look at the world-famous Graz collection of Armor in Austria and recaptures the chivalry and grandeur of a legendary, by-gone age.
