| | Britains Educational Reform $310.66 This book questions many of Britains idiosyncratic attitudes towards education. | | Britains War Machine By Edgerton, David $53.56 The familiar image of the British in the Second World War is that of the plucky underdog taking on German might. David Edgertons bold, compelling new history shows the conflict in a new light, with Britain as a very wealthy country, formidable in arms, ruthless in pursuit of its interests, and in command of a global production system. Rather than belittled by a Nazi behemoth, Britain arguably had the worlds most advanced mechanized forces. It had not only a great empire, but allies large and small. Edgerton shows that Britain fought on many fronts and its many home fronts kept it exceptionally well supplied with weapons, food and oil, allowing it to mobilize to an extraordinary extent. It created and deployed a vast empire of machines, from the humble tramp steamer to the battleship, from the rifle to the tank, made in colossal factories the world over. Scientists and engineers invented new weapons, encouraged by a government and prime minister enthusiastic about the latest technologies. The British, indeed Churchillian, vision of war and modernity was challenged by repeated defeat at the hands of less wellequipped enemies. Yet the end result was a vindication of this vision. Like the United States, a powerful Britain won a cheap victory, while others paid a great price. Putting resources, machines and experts at the heart of a global rather than merely imperial story, Britains War Machine demolishes timeworn myths about wartime Britain and gives us a groundbreaking and often unsettling picture ofa great power in action Author: Edgerton, David Subtitle: Weapons, Resources, and Experts in the Second World War Publication Date: 2011/09/09 Number of Pages: 445 Binding Type: Hardcover Language: English Depth: 1.75 Width: 6.00 Height: 9.00 |

Men of War: Weird Tank Part 1 of 3
Pangea Day Crossing Borders
It’s a strange coincidence that in the same month the world’s attention is riveted on the dilemmas posed by natural disasters in Burma and China, a short film festival hosted in five continents focuses on addressing the borders that separate people from one another.
Â
The Pangea Day concept was developed in 2006 by documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim when she won the TED (Technology Education Design) Prize. Jehane wished to use film to bring the world together. Pangea Day, on May 10, featured a 4-hour program of films, music and speakers promoting peace and world harmony, centred in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro, broadcast live across the world through the internet, television, digital cinemas and mobile phones.
Johannes Leonardo, New York, an agency started by Jan Jacobs and Leo Premutico, with agency producer Matthew Mattingly, took on the role of promoting Pangea Day through an international viral campaign.
Tank Driver
Pangea Day was initially promoted with "Tank Driver", an inside perspective on the Tiananmen Square protest of June 1989 in Beijing, filmed and produced by The Glue Society via Radical Media.
On June 5, 1989, a lone protester stood in front of a line of tanks on the Avenue of Eternal Peace, attempting to stop them from advancing on the crowds of protesters in the Square. This was only a day after troops had shot and killed hundreds of protesters. The man waved his belongings in front of the tank signalling for the driver to stop. After thwarting a number of attempts to move around him, the protester climbed up on the tank and spoke to the driver.
The Tank Driver spot explores the now familiar story with additional footage from inside the tank. What would it have been like to have encountered the protester? "Inside every tank there is a human being."
Imagine Anthem Series
Six film directors were commissioned to film the performance of a national anthem sung by performers of another nation. Interestingly the lyrics of most national anthems have been written in the context of conflict with other nations or within. Their performance in this series has the potential to stimulate debate as much as friendship.
Imagine – Australia Sings Lebanon
Kris Moyes at Revolver, gathered together Sydney singers to perform Kullna Lilwatan, the national anthem of Lebanon. Over recent years media coverage of young gangs of Lebanese men has deepened already existing tension in Sydney, and culminated in what become known as the Cronulla riots of 2004. Key members of the choir include Sonny Abberton, co-founder of the Bra Boys, a white surf gang who have historically clashed with the Lebanese, are singing here.
Imagine – Kenya Sings India
Bob Nyanja from Blue Sky Films films a Kenyan choir singing the Indian national anthem, Jana-gana-mana, against the backdrops of Nairobi City and Uhuru Park. Kenya is home to a sizeable Indian population (including Sikhs & Jains also) of approximately 2.5 million, most of them descendants of the East African Railways labourers who were brought over by the British during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the British colonialists ruled Kenya and the rest of the East African region.
Imagine – France sings USA
Laurent Briet via Mister BoomBoom, Paris worked with a group of French singers taking on The Star Spangled Banner. The act of singing this anthem is designed to be a statement about reconciliation, mutual understanding and movement towards international cooperation. So what's the history here? There was a brief maritime war between the two countries in the late 1790s, indirectly leading to the 1812 war with Britain. The Star Spangled Banner was written during the war of 1812. What's the history since then? Maybe the Americans or French could fill in the gaps...
Imagine – Japan sings Turkey
Kosai Sekine from Creative Hybrid, worked with a Japanese troupe singing and dancing a translation of Istiklâl Marsi, the Turkish anthem. Turkey was chosen because of the historical friendship between the two countries. In 1864 the Turkish built frigate Ertugrul sank on its way to Japan, with only 69 survivors. The Japanese government helped the survivors return to their homes and built a memorial in Oshima as a mark of friendship of the Japanese people for Turkey.
Imagine - UK sings Argentina
Minivegas via Anonymous Content and Independent Films Production, chose to film an English choir singing the Argentinian Anthem because of the historical significance of the 1982 Falklands War and the intense rivalry between the national football teams. Judging by the comments on YouTube feelings about the war are still intense in both Argentina and the UK.
Imagine – USA sings Mexico
Baker Smith from Harvest Films, films the Angel City Chorale singing "Mexicanos, al grito de guerra" facing away from the border fence as residents of Mexico come to look through the wire netting. The choir stands with backs to the border, perhaps singing on behalf of the Mexican people rather than to them.
The Pangea Day festival has come and gone, without a lot of media attention. International stories have largely been focused on the tragedies in Burma and China, agonizing over the boundary issues relating to aid, sovereignty, national identity and justice. It looks as though the mutual understanding being encouraged in the Pangea Day initiative will be needed for a long time to come.
