British Life Guards

About the foot and life guards in london?
Are they apart of the British Army or what
and if they are would they be hand picked cause i dont think there are very many of them so its obviously not somrthing one can just apply for
By the foot guards I take it you are talking about the Guards Division who perform ceremonial duties at Buckingham palace and other Royal palaces in London.
The Guards Division is made up of 5 regiments, the Scots, Irish and Welsh guards which are primarily recruited in those countries (after Irish independence it's a mix of Irishmen, Irish living in the UK and areas with strong Irish connections, such as Liverpool which makes up 50% of recruits into the Irish Guards). The other two regiments are English, the Coldstream and Grenadier Guards. These are regular army regiments and undertake their share of operations in the British army. For Example the Irish Guards paraded through Liverpool last year on their return from operations in Afghanistan. The five regiments will rotate between ceremonial and regular duties, normally two on ceremonial and three on regular duties.
By life guards I take it you mean the Household Cavalry, which is made up of two regiments, the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals. Again these are regular regiments in the British Army which switch between regular duties and ceremonial duties. As in most armies, cavalry regiments have taken up an armoured reconnaissance role, and that's the regular duties of both these regiments. A trooper from the houshold cavalry was killed when his scimitar tank was attacked by an American A10 'tankbuster' in a friendly fire incident in Iraq.
The Life Guards is the 'senior' regiment in the British Army meaning that on parade it will have special recognitions from other regiments on parade. Being the senior regiment does not mean it is the oldest.
All British regiments tend to have links to specific areas which they recruit from, the Scots and Welsh guards recruit from those countries. The Irish guards I have covered. I believe the Coldstream Guards recruit from Northern England, whilst the Grenadiers recruit from the south.
The cavalry regiments tend to recruit from the countryside, but the officers of all these regiments tend to be drawn from the upper classes. The Queens Grand children William and Harry are both officers in the Blues and Royals.

| | Guards! Guards $16.44 Terry Pratchett mocks secret societies, royal pretenders, and the life of the humble beat cop in this eighth entry in the Discworld fantasy series. An ancient (well, ancient since last February) brotherhood attempts to restore the monarchy of the city of Ankh-Morpork through a complicated scheme involving the summoning of dragons. Pitted against them is the downtrodden Night Watch, which includes such notable personages as Captain Vimes, an alcoholic cynic with an unshakeable integrity, and new recruit Lance-Constable Carrot, a strapping, an unbelievably idealistic young man raised by dwarves. Captain Vimes and the Watch appear in several subsequent Discworld novels. |

Queen's Life Guard at horse guards in London.
Do you think the British military has cooler names for their units than the Americans?
The Life Guards
The Black Watch
The Coldstream Guards
etc.,
We have "Thunder Birds" "Screaming Eagles" "SEALS" kind of boring.
New Model Army
Its about Heritage.... Most of the names for American units come out of American history so have no interest In American history then you really have no interest in there names.
The Life Guards- Makes me think about boy scouts at a pool.
The Black Watch - Could be construed as racist.
The Coldstream Guards- Why would a Stream need guarding?
Thunder birds - A Large American Cryptid and legend that is rumored to cause thunder when it flaps its wings.
Screaming Eagles - Invokes then image of the eagle diving from the sky attacking something.
SEALs- Is an Acronym for SEa Air Land, denoting the fact that they operate in all areas. Some of the Imagery that SEALs Invoke is A Diver riding on a shark, An Anthropomorphic Frog lighting a stick of dynamite with a Cigar, and as of late John "Calico Jack" Rackhams Jolly Roger.
Note that All the British names denote a defensive position where as Americans are offensive.
