| | Old Guard $86.03 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Old Guard (French Vieille Garde) was the elite veteran division of the Emperor Napoleons Imperial Guard. As such it was the most prestigious formation in Napoleons Grande Arm e. The Old Guard was formed of veteran soldiers who had served Napoleon since his earliest campaigns. It is believed that Napoleon handselected members of his Old Guard based on physical traits, most notably aboveaverage height. Their imposing stature was likely impressive to foes and allies alike. Serving in the army for several years as well as a citation for bravery were also taken into consideration when selecting troops into the Old Guard. There were four regiments of Old Guard infantry: the 1st Grenadiers, 2nd Grenadiers, 1st Chasseurs, and 2nd Chasseurs. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Napoleon Total War The Old Guard
What's the best looking military uniform both in present and in the past?
Please, no offence on any side. I just want to question the poll in terms of its appearance and its style. And no flaming too, please. And please give some reasons and descriptions of you choice
Uniform from the past:
a) Napoleonic Era
~French Imperial Guard
~British Royal Guard
~Hussar
~German Jaeger
~Russian
~Austrian
b) WWI Era:
~French
~British
~Russian
~German
~Austro-Hungarian
c)WWII Era (the formal suit, not the combat uniform):
~Japanese
~US Marine
~British
~French
~SS guard of the Nazi Germany
d)Present day:
~People's Liberation Army (07 series uniform, note: it's a totally different version from the old style)
~US Marine
~others (please state it out)
Present day, USMC. No doubt. Very sharp. Dramatic contrasts with the pristine white against the dark uniform, gold buttons, shiny decorations, white belt, Blue trousers and the loud blood stripe down the leg... can't design a more attractive uniform. It's the pinnacle, I think.
WWII - hate to say it but the Nazi's got that one sewed up. They had some sharp assed uniforms. Especially the long leather coat that accompanied an officer's uniform. Neatly tailored, bloused in the boots, meticulous attention to detail. Gotta vote on the Nazi's for this one.
Can't speak intelligently about WW1 and Napoleonic era so I won't try. Just my opinion on WW2 and Modern day.
One note, I do think the Navy's Dress Khaki's for officers was a sharp uniform in WW2. It just was easy to look at. Very clean looking. I wish they'd bring it back.

Napoleon lost for a few reasons. 1…..He always used his artillery (Guns) to soften up the enemy. Guns on mass breaking down the infantry formations. At Waterloo….he sent in his infantry and did not use his guns. 2…..Wellington had his army on the high ground, giving him greater range on his muskets. 3……..The weather did not help, Napoleon the ground was muddy and slick, now he had to have his troops fight up hill in slick conditions then fight the british. Finally wellington did have his artillery in-placed and it tore a hole through the Imperial guards calvary units. Lastly and obviously Wellingtons infantry were way more schooled in discipline and Napoleonic tactics from previous battles. Napoleon would break up British box formations then pick off the unprotected infantry. At Waterloo the British forces held to their box formations, thus what every Imperial guard calvary that managed to get under the guns and survived the enemy artillery attack now had to face the fixed bayonets and lances of infantry in a box formation, the first three lines of a box formation would form into a big spiky wall protecting the infantry inside from Sabre and lancer attacks. Likewise the men behind the three lines of defence would be firing their muskets at the calvary who had lost their momentum of attack. You could say it was Napoleon acting out of character that caused his defeat, he made mistakes he would not have made in other battles.
