fear of death in the army?!?
ok so i want to go fight on the frontline with the british army but im scared of death? im 14 years old. is this common? can anyone give me some advice or some figures About how meny people actually die in the army?
You're only 14 and you're already worried about death... that's incredible. This world's really gone down hill.
I'm an old man, almost 70. I joined the US Navy at 20. In Boot Camp in 1960 I was asked, "Do you want to die for your country?" My answer was something along the lines of, "Sir, I joined the Navy to serve my country, and if I have to die in that service, I'm ready to do so. But dying for any reason isn't first on my list of things to do after lunch."
I spent about 12 of my 25 years in the Navy doing very un-navylike things. The only time I was aboard a ship was as a passenger -- never as crew. Most of the time I was on land or in the water. I think what kept me alive was more my desire to get the job done. When the bullets are flying, I think you'll find that your training takes over.
I've seen kids who were scared right down to their socks going into a combat situation. When things started happening, I've seen the training kick in and watched these new soldiers react almost as well as veterans. When it was all over, I've seen those same soldiers look at each other with a kind of surprised look on their faces as if to say, "Holy
Fear isn't necessarily a bad thing. It keeps you alert. It keeps you ready to react quickly and in a manner that can save your life. But it can also be a bad thing if it paralyzes you and keeps you from doing anything.
US General George S. Patton once said, “The time to take counsel of your fears is before you make an important battle decision. That's the time to listen to every fear you can imagine! When you have collected all the facts and fears and made your decision, turn off all your fears and go ahead!”
He also said something like, "Nobody ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making sure the other guy died for his." That's paraphrased because General Patton was wont to be a tad pithy at times.
But another Patton quote is, "If we take the generally accepted definition of bravery as a quality which knows no fear, I have never seen a brave man. All men are frightened. The more intelligent they are, the more they are frightened."
I've been wounded.. Once or twice I figured I'd had it. But my buddies carried me off the field and I'm still around. Everybody dies. Fearing death doesn't change the inevitable... it just makes life less enjoyable. I don't know at what age you can get into the British Army, but I think you have a few years yet before you have to worry about it. Enjoy them.

Occupational health & safety professionals and many frontline operations managers will agree when I say that dealing directly with the public is becoming a moreand more dangerous and risky thing to do.
Assaults and knife attacks on emergency services personnel, nurses, social and health care workers, taxi and truck drivers are increasingly common. When it comes to knife crime, it is surprisingly difficult to quantify that danger. In terms of fatal stabbings, the Conservative Party in he UK have issued figures at the end of 2008 claiming that there were more than five fatal stabbings each week, yet the government disputed this, asserting that knives were not the only weapons used.

I have personally noted a growing need for knife and cut resistant clothing because many frontline operatives have recently indicated that they feel unsafe during their work. Teachers, social and health care workers, taxi drivers, fraud investigators, BT and British Gas employees and many others have expressed the fear they feel when dealing with intoxicated, disrespectful or hostile individuals. For these frontline staff stab vests are too confrontational, heavy or inappropriate.
