can you correct me this text please, about chaucer??? thank you vey much!!!?
If we take, as example of Chaucer greatness, the description of the merchant, we can easily recognise at least one thing that makes him such a great writer.
By looking at the behaviuor or more in general, at the whole character of the mearchant, we can notice that he is a well-dressed
(maybe even too well-dressed for a pilgrim) man; from the "flemish beaver hat" on his head to the "daintily buckled boots" on his feet he is as good as the noble soon of the knight, the squire. He resmble the stereotype of the medieval merchant that tries to gain social prestige trought his behaviour and his cloth to redeem himself by his unhappy social position (even Manzoni in his masterpiece "I Promessi Sposi", set more than 200 years later, write about a merchant that is so unhappy by his social position that during a dinner banned a guest because he was talking about merchant)
One indication of Chaucer's greatness as a writer is his description of the merchant. By examining the merchant's character, the reader first notices that he is well dressed (perhaps too well dressed for a pilgrim). This is evident from the description of his "flemish beaver hat"(pg #) and his "daintily buckled boots"(pg#). The reader is lead to believe that he is every bit as well-dressed as the squire. He symbolizes the stereotypical medieval merchant who tries to gain social prestige through his behaviour and his clothing in an effort to redeem himself from his lowly social status. Two-Hundred years later, Manzoni wrote in his masterpiece "I Promessi Sposi" of a similar merchant who, during dinner, threw a guest out for talking about him.

Why didn't medieval infantry strike cavarly with long pike? Why was cavarly so strong?
Since the Charles Martel's Battle of Tours (7th Century) to 14th Century, the strongest medieval military force was cavalry. But I don't understand this. As depicted in the Braveheart movie, infantry (foot soldiers) can strike horse with very long pikes easily (much longer than knight's pike). This is not a rocket science. Anybody can think of this. Then, why wasn't every infantry try the same?? Pike Square strategy was not invented until late 15th Century!! Why?
Most soldiers were actually farmers and even the pros were constantly were reinventing weapons and tactics since word really didn't get around about other people's weapons and tactics. There were many pole arms (even farmers' pitch forks) used to bring down horsemen. Generally horsemen that didn't have bows were used to flank an enemy and take out the enemy's archers and commanders from the side while the infantry moved up the middle. If the horsemen were using bows, pikes would not have helped.
