Piece British Soldiers

What happens to the Army's old guns when they upgrade to new ones?
Reading about all the shootings going on around the world got me to thinking what happens when an Army of a major country like UK, USA etc. makes a weapon obsolete.
In the 1960's, I was a boy soldier serving in the Cold War Theatre. The UK's front line infantry weapon was the 7.62 SLR (Self Loading Rifle) derived from the Belgian FN. The rifle was almost as tall as me, bloody heavy, only fired single shot, kicked like a mule when it got fouled up and was impossible to deploy in a vehicle without whacking someone over the head with it. That said, it was a superb weapon for killing elephants and suchlike. It could shoot through a brick wall in the next town and was consistantly accurate.
When the British Army 'Upgraded' to the SA80 ( piece of crap) there must have been tens of thousands of SLR's knocking about. Discounting the ones the British sold to Fred Carnos army etc, what happened to all those rifles. What did we do with them?
Don't know if y'all have the exact same thing, but we yanks collect them up and send our old weapons to an Arms Depot, where they are stored for further disposition.
Then they're either sold/given to our 3rd world allies, destroyed as per Clintons order, or sold to the public under the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
Under the later M1 Garands are available for reasonable amounts of money to people who demonstrate they're used for the stated purpose.

LSD Testing (British Troops)
How many active troops did Britain have in 1934?
I'm writing a piece dealing with British preparations for war; I really need to know how many soldiers Britain had in 1934, 1937 and 1939, so that I can show the increase.
If anybody knows, that's brilliant, and thank you.

Having trawled my bookshelves, I have no decisive answer for you - but perhaps a few pointers.
By the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, Germany was limited to an army of 100,000. Presumably, this was considered small.
Historically, Britain had for two centuries had a much smaller army compared to their overall population than their continental neighbours. On the other hand, she always had a much bigger navy (you say soldiers up above. To you mean soldiers or military personnel?).
Faced with events in Germany, British re-armament began in 1936. Most of the spending was on the navy and the RAF, who argumed that they needed new, modern equipment. The army got off badly.
Much of the standing British army was stationed round the Empire; proably less than half was available for commitment to a European war at any one time.
In 1938 is was esitmated that Germany could put 39 divisions in the field immediately, and a furthe 40 within a week. The equivalent figures for france were 16 and 17; for Belgium 1 and 14. By contrast, Britain estimeated that it could get two divisions over the channel within 30 days of the outbreak if war.
