Russian Tsar Ivan
Russian Tsar Ivan
How is the reign of Ivan the terrible viewed in Russia today?

I heard that the Russian word grozny doesn't exactly mean terrible.

More like formidable or fearsome.

Is Ivan IV known as a good king in Tsar in Russia or is he viewed with negative connatations in Russia today?

Liberasts and others of russophobic public, of course, have negative view on the reign of Ivan IV.
But for others he is one of the greatest statesmans of russian history.
According to the "Name of Russia" he is among 12 most popular historic figures of Russia (http://www.nameofrussia.ru)

The Image of Ivan the Terrible in Russian Folklore

The Image of Ivan the Terrible in Russian Folklore

$79.66

Ivan the Terrible has long been a controversial figure. Some historians regard him as a crazed and evil tyrant; while others (especially Soviet scholars of the Stalin period) have viewed him as a progressive and farsighted statesman. The folklore about Ivan has played an important part in these debates. Was Ivans depiction in folklore favourable or hostile? And how far can it be regarded as evidence of contemporary popular attitudes towards the tsar? In this unusual and farranging study, Maureen Perrie discusses the nature of Ivans image in Russian folklore; its historical basis; its development; and the controversies which have surrounded it in prerevolutionary and Soviet Russian scholarship. She argues that Ivan was in general portrayed in folklore in a positive light, but that this image does not necessarily reflect sixteenthcentury views. Help with Russian History?

1- What was the state of the Russian economy immediately after the expulsion of the mongols in the 15th century?

2- Ivan IV, Ivan the terrible was most known for doing what?

3- Which was NOT an accomplishment of Tsar Michael?
~~inclusion of part of the Ukraine, including Kiev, in the Russian empire
~~restoration of autocracy
~~driving out foreign invaders

4- What was the purpose of of Peter the Great's policy of economic development?

5- What was the limitation of Peter the Great's policy of economic development?

6- In what way did Peter the Great shift the foreign policy interests of Russia?

7- Why did the Russian expansion policy focus particularly on central Asia?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :) thank you!

1) Don't know. But I would guess kinda shoddy. The russian economy wasn't known for it "pop" it was known for scant harvests of wheat and babushkas.

2)Being freakin' terrible. He had people killed for nothing at all. Murdered folk in his palace etctera. He was a bloody handed czar and is respopnsible for Russia's first real purges. The purge would become important after Stalin came to power some four centuries later when about 50 to 100 million russians were killed as a result of Stalin's nuttyness.

3)Czar Mike? Whaaa?

4)To bring Russia up to speed after lagging behind for a century or more. Peter wanted Russia to be competitive with Europe, so he bought european advisors and built a european styled econmy. St. Petersburg was his city. He had it built and had it built in the eriopean style because it was to be his main port for european trade.

5)dunno.. consult the text book or your class notes. You DID take notes RIGHT?

6) Peter the great shifted russian foreign policy away from a centrist isolationist government to a more erocentric view. By mingling with the nations of europe, russia was able to bring itself into the pre-industrial age. However after peter, little was done to continue the moderization so the era of WWI found russia inadequate. Bang Zoom war and failure. Bing! Revolution Ouch! Stalin's five year plans for a crash industrialization of russia and to quote molotov "maybe 7 maybe 50 million dead"

7) Russians love the name Stan?

Good luck. Remember, go to class and take notes. You won't be here later trusting folk who are so drunk they can bartely see straight.
