Different take on Kamikazes. What do you think?

I came upon this thought when I learned the Japanese Carrier Fleet was sacrificed as decoys for the main fleet in the Battle of Layete.

We've seen Kamikazes as fanatics but; following Japan's loss of it's Carrier Fleet, they had no means of launching air attacks against the advancing Allied Fleet except from distant airfields. This pretty much insured the pilot a one way trip.

Given this and the Allied advantage in number, experience and aircraft superiority, there was little hope for the pilot to effect the outcome. Since every pilot must accept death as a possible outcome of their mission wasn't using his aircraft as the ultimate weapon the only logical choice for defense of the 'Home Land'?

Japan did not resort to this tactic while the ability to recover the aircraft and pilot existed. Maybe they were honorable warriors making the ultimate sacrifice in the only means available.

What do you think?

I'd say you are right. It was the best means to strike at the enemy.

What do you think?

I think you are correct. I think the mindset was not about committing suicide, but carrying out a mission in which they cannot return.
Even the Banzai attacks of the Japanese soldiers were still pretty conventional, with the mentality that it was just not possible to go back. If they had the idea that they were committing suicide, they would have strapped bombs to themselves like the Palestinians do.
